General Cycling Discussion - My first project bike.

Hey gang. I bought my first project bike today from a nice gentleman on Craig's List. It's a mid 80's true tempered steel "Gary Fisher Hoo Koo e Koo" mountain bike. I paid 100 for it, yeah kinda steep for a 20 year old bike with outdated components but something about it wouldn't let me stop thinking about it. I stripped it almost bare as it was ridable when I bought it. It currently has a Shimano Biopace triple crank & a 6 speed free wheel.

I plan on new cantilever brakes, updated wheel set, new tires, updated crank set & shifter/derailers, seat-post & saddle along with a new handlebar. I've never done anything like this before so this will be quite a learning experience for me. :)

That is a nice frame. Light, tough, durable. You are gonna end up with a nice bike. And, nothing rides nicer than a light steel frame and fork.

Thanks alanbikehouston, I'm hoping she rides well when all is said & done. I just ordered a seat post, saddle & handlebar from Nashbar this morning. I'm gonna take my time with her, I'm excited about building my first bike. :D

Those older steel, all-rigid mountain bikes make awesome do-anything-go-anywhere bikes. I bought an older Specialized Hard Rock at a yard sale to pull my kids' trailer and then I started using it as a commuter and errand runner. It's great.

That is a gorgeous bike, I love old Fishers. Ironically my roomate recently parted with his 94 Hoo Koo and he regrets it. The few steel pre-Trek Fishers I've ridden handle like a dream. Not that the later ones are bad, they are mostly aluminum, I just like the retro ones better.

Looks like a nice find. I especially like the tires---similar to a pair I just pulled off my old Miyata. I look forward to seeing the updates. Have fun.
