For those that don't roll their Stridas and Bromptons, do you have any tricks for carrying your folder?

I've recently been fascinated by cyclocross so today I decided to carry my folder by putting the seat on my shoulder. This didn't work perfectly well because my seat tube was folded: I think it will work with the seat tube unfolded but then it's not as versitile a fold. Although even with my folder's seat resting in my palm on my shoulder (elbow bent) it was much easier to carry than with one hand on the bike and the frame against my pelvis. Carrying with two hands is not always an option.

What is your trick?

I find that because of the 20" wheels, the Swift is significantly shorter than a "normal" bike (even with it's full-length wheel base). So for normal up & down stairs or using the elevator etc. I don't even bother folding. The crossbar on the Swift is at a very convenient height for me to lift the bike. Just holding it in one hand under the crossbar and one hand steadying the handlebars I can carry the bike a long way without tiring.

I don't like to carry the Swift on my shoulder, as I'm likely to get chain grease all over my arm/torso. I don't think it'd be good to carry my Dahon that way either, too much of the weight will end up above your shoulder so it'd be very awkward.

I've never had a problem using both hands to carry my bike, though. I can't imagine a situation where it's genuinely "not an option," and that includes negotiating many flights of stairs, turnstiles, trains and train stations.

I just grab my Brompton in the middle of the bar and off I go. The folded bike has a very narrow profile so carrying it in one hand without getting grease on my trousers isn't a problem.
