Commuting - Do I have the shortest commute here?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hi! I'm so glad I found you folks. After browsing the Commuting forum a bit, it looks like a lot of folks who hang out here have my attitude about bikes--they're fun to ride around!
Anyway . . . .
I was wondering if anybody has a shorter "commute" than me. I'm three short blocks from my office. Since I don't get much riding in just going to and from work, I make it up by biking to lunch and running errands.
I love living in the city!
I think I've got it at just over 2 blocks (3/4 + 1 + 1/2) all the way to my office. I usually walk because I get a longer "workout" that way. I ride my bike for alot of errands, too.

I'm almost tied with you, it's now three blocks plus a parking-lot traverse :) I need to figure out a longer route or I'm going to begin gaining weight, after having had a 10-mile round-trip route for years.
We can start the Very Short Commuting Club or something :D

Mine is half a block
Does it count as a longer commute if I go out of my way to get a donut? :D I can tack on an extra six blockes that way!

maybe some of you shorties need to put a wind trainer on your rear wheel. There used to be ones that clamped to the seat post for use on rollers. Find a better job, further away? See if the company will let you haul supplies to branch offices.
my brother would have the shortest commute, he lives literally half a block from his work, and from home to work it's down hill the whole way! and he still lives with our parents and my dad is an avid biker with about 6 working bikes laying around and yet i still can't convince him to ride to work, he's 19, athletic football player type, but still drives. my dad is 55 and commutes 4 miles by bike, go figure. my wife has a 6 block downhill bike commute to work.

He drives half a block? Heck it's further then that from the parking lot at work to the door, where I work, planning on biking it (13km one way), once my commuter conversion on my mountain bike is done.....

I walk down the hall, not even making it to the bike, err, dining room* and plop in front of the computer, beat that! ;) So, I get my riding in when I feel like I've accomplished something.
* (even my better half now calls it the bike room sometimes :D)
yep and the car he drives has lots of problems, won't be long before its broke down somewhere in that half block stretch of road, that would be funny, he could push it home. i hope he'd push it home, it'd be a testament to laziness if he called a tow truck for that, its down hill but not steep, barely enough to keep you going if you don't pedal. i wonder how much gas it costs to start a badly running truck and drive it half a block 4 times a day (goes home for lunch)? it only gets like 8 miles/gallon.

god you could commute on a red flyer wagon just jump on it and push down the hill then when it finally runs out of momentem you could walk the rest of the way

Beaten. I have a studio apartment in NYC.

Add a couple of lights and a rack and it's good to go! :D
actually when you arrive at the entrance to the parking lot there's a strong downward slope towards the front door, i bet you could ride the red flyer wagon right to the front door.

my commute (to work) is 45 seconds, on foot, limping, taking my time, and often trying to eat and whistle at the same time. No, my bike is for 16 miles to school.

I have a neighbor who drives her car to go across the street. I would estimate the distance at about 35 yards. I once worked at an extended stay facility for dieters. Their meals and workouts were done in the building across the street. I would guess that about 70% of them drove to get there. They were paying thousands of dollars to lose weight too.
Wow - I thought my commute was short at 1.31 miles (per mapquest). Sometimes it takes me longer to put on my rain gear than actually get home (only need it though during rainy season here in Oregon - October to July 4).

Th shortest route for me is about 45 city blocks. But I find a way to add a few miles if I have the time...

Wow, and here I've never mentioned the length of my commute because I thought half a mile was so short I'd get kicked out of the commuting forum! I probably spend more time getting into my rain or winter gear than I do actually riding, too.
I have also added time and distance to my commute by stopping off for a donut and some milk. Strangely, this is more common in the winter than the summer as the milk stays colder in the bottle cage during the winter!
I work for my city and one of the Council members (who is also cyclist) pointed out the other day that last summer the City's reconstruction projects just happened to be the roads I use on my commute. I assured him I had nothing to do with the brand new, sixty-six foot wide bike paths between my house and City Hall!

Mine is a wimpy three blocks as well, and I love it that way! When I moved into my current apartment, I rented it specifically for the location. Close to a bunch of my favorite stores and work. I used to walk to work but.. I enjoy the ride more. Gets me going more. My parking lot is pretty hilly, and the ride to work is down a short grade, and up a short 7% grade. Pretty nice to wake you up, even if it is three blocks ;D
However, I do commute cross-town (about 16 miles round-trip) to my fiancee's home. And I love it! During rush hour (5pm) I can get there just as fast as I could in my pickup, even with going about a mile west out of the way. This town has some great paths. And I commute most everywhere else via the bike.
So in reality I get about 100 miles + a week in, even though my work commute is only three blocks each way ;)

3 miles round trip. It is wierd. I used to work 16 miles round trip and I think the longer one was more fun. I do like the current commute but the longer one was pretty and more chellenging. I too love living inthe city. Today I went into downtown Minneapolis and it was such a nice day. I'm only six miles from downtown

I have a friend who lives about 0.4 miles from her office in the University of Maryland Physics building. She mostly drives to work and parks in a lot on the far side of campus, also about 0.4 miles from her office. :p
I've recently convinced her to at least TRY bike commuting (and helped her tune up her bike). Some people
0.4 miles? I would walk.
I'm assuming she's parking in either Lot 6 or Lot 4 and that's about the same distance from the Physics building. wow...

no offense to that person (ok, maybe i am lying), but that is ****ing stupid. .4 miles is such a small distance. i walked that just to get to my ex-girlfriends place on the edge of campus and it was maybe a 10 minute walk. the fact that she ends up walking that far anyways just defies logic.
