I just found a old steel frame on the street. Fits perfectly:)

Someone painted it a disgusting blue. Now I'm wondering 2 things.

1) How do I remove the paint? Is there a way to remove it so I can at least see what brand frame it is?

2) Is there any way to figure out what kind of frame it is without removing the paint?

1A) Although it's pretty caustic stuff, I have great luck with Jasco Paint & Epoxy remover. Lay it on thick going in one direction only. Then put the frame/fork in a big (45 gal) garbage bag overnight. The next day use a small toothbrush sized wire brush to remove paint goo. Repeat process if needed. When most/all the paint is gone, rinse the frme thoroughly with water. Dry with paper towels. For any little bits of paint, they can be sanded off with 220 grit, or picked off with an old pocket knife.
1B) Use 220 -320 grit sandpaper and CAREFULLY SAND OFF THE DISGUSTING BLUE. If you are careful, you should be able to expose the decals (assuming they exist under said blue) to determine what brand it is. As a note, sand around the tube as opposed to along the tube, for best results when trying to read the old decals.

2A) Thats going to be dependent on what can be read through the disgusting blue i.e; serial number, cut-outs in the seat cluster, brake bridge and/or bottom bracket shell. Also check the lower headtube lug for any kind of brand/marks. The fork crown may or may not indicate frame brand, as the forks may have been replaced. If nothing is readable through the disgusting blue, then you will have to start scraping off some paint in the above mentioned areas.
Next you'll have to start a thread in Classic/Vintage to see who knows what about the info you gather.

GOOD LUCK! If you have any other questions regarding stripping/repainting, you can always PM me.
