I ran a couple of checkpoints during the 1983 RAAM, wrote a story about it, and sent it to the UMCA. They put it in their latest issue. Whee. I was the official for a hill climb prime in that RAAM. 192+ miles and 2 miles of vertical from Grand Junction to Loveland Pass. The oldest guy in the race won out over the likes of Haldeman and Penseyers because he took an 8 hour sleep just before he got to me. Did it in only 16 hours after having ridden all the way from the west coast.

Pete was a monster on these races and in the 86 RAAM set a solo record for transcontinental with an average speed of 15.40mph still unbroken today; then in 89 set a record speed of 24mph on a modified bike with full flairings. The year you did the story he got rookie of the year. And he just kept on and on and race last in 2006 in the over 60 catagory, and those guys did well...hopefully next year they will have some competitors for the over 60 to race against if they can find some old riders still alive!
