we bought my 8 year old a redline bmx style bike for his birthday (jan 28th) -and we have gone on some cold cold rides since...well, now he wants to go to the bike store and get 'stuff' - now i have to fit his needs into my already strained cycling stuff budget.

this is going to cramp my style. and i wouldn't have it any other way.

That's great! Can't think of a better use for ones biking funds than to help another person get started in our sport. Especially one of our own.

Am looking forwardc to my daughter getting back on her bike after the birth of our grandaughter. The next step is to get our grandaughter on a bike. What do you think? One year to get her into a trailer/child bike seat? Five years to get her on her own bicycle?

so, the addiction is inherited?

Reading this thread I realized that 1oldRoadie is probably right. My Mom bought me my first bike without me having to ask. I have been fascinated with the freedom of cycling ever since. I just don't think she realized the monster she was creating with that first purchase.

I feel ya- my best riding companion last summer was my 4 year old nephew. We'd go out and ride every time I was in town. He had a nice new bike and we would hit the streets (him on the sidewalk), and I'd clock him on my bike computer, and we'd do these bike races. We also had a small hill, and I taught him how to come out of the saddle and climb up the hill... he was goooooood!!!

Don't they have after school jobs for eight year olds? :D <j/k>

I feel your pain. :)
My kids are all grown now so the "cycling budget" is all mine. ;)

If your son is only 8, he's only just begun to dip into your bike budget, if he's anything like my three sons. They seem to know exactly how much I have in my wallet that I'm trying to save up to fuel my bike addiction...I think they inherited that ability from my wife! :roflmao: :roflmao: Just remember not to let them dip into the beer budget!

My oldest son now rides a bike I can ride too. So he got a mountain bike. My youngest son rides his older brother's Schwinn BMX bike that I spruced up for him. My daughter the youngest is now at the age of two eyeing her brother's old Specialized training bike. She rides in the Burly still.

This doesn't include Mom's bike and my two.

I need a seperate garage for the bicycles and stuff.

Rewind to Summer 2002.

Bought FOUR new Mountain Bikes (and all the support gear) for the former "anchors" (http://www.bikecolorado.com/bc/resultsfastFacts.cfm?alid=1&letter=A&table=FastFacts):

One Hot Biker Chick (and soon to be wife) (http://www.donaldsonclan.net/Clan2002-06Engagement.htm)

One fourteen year old daughter that now uses her allowance to buy bike gear and wants to race this season.

One eleven year old daughter - happy and content to hang with old Dad on the trail.

One nine year old son who only seems to want to "ride the technical stuff"!

Color me a very happy old Mountain Biking family man!
