I'll be staying at the Newport Marriott Coast Villas 9/2-4 (off Newport Coast Drive I think) and would like to ride with groups there. I'm used to the fast Sundance rides of 40-60 miles in Agoura and the Santa Monicas. I checked the OC Wheelman page and their rides look good. Can anyone give me some information about the rides? (How come no one on PCH in OC waves to other riders?)

I ride PCH almost everyday, and wave at just about anything on two wheel's :D It's hit and miss if I get a wave back, but will almost always get a nod :)

I'm sure I'd recognize him, but don't know him by name.

I always wave! And lots of people wave at me first....

Hang around for a while -- the increased sample size may lead you to a different conclusion :D

Now I wonder how many times I've waved/nodded at Gretzky...

Two other groups to check out - both have good websites so you can check out their rides:

Bicycle Club of Irvine (bikeirvine.org)

Orange County Rebels Riders (OCrebels.com)

Both groups offer a variety of rides have have some and very fast groups. Rebles have their formal longer rides on Saturday and BCI has theirs on Sunday. Both groups also have Monday rides scheduled.
OCW is also a good group. Much more formal structure than either BCI of OCRR.

Good luck have fun!!!
