Fifty Plus (50+) - Another Hurricane

Well, here we go again, we are under a Hurricane watch and the fun begins; 24hr hurricane TV, lines for gas and water and a probable warning by tonight which will cause business to shut down. This is really getting to be a pain. I guess I will get out and ride tonight since the next couple of days will probably be a wash out.

I lived over there for the last 3 years. That's why I moved to Texas 6 mouths ago. The insurance was killing us as well. Good luck,George

- looks like us Suncoasters dodged a bullet again - but we're still in the COW (cone of wobble)... i expect a good blow Wed/Thu/Fri, so i did a 30-miler today and will do a slow, long ride tomorrow (it rained here all day on Sat/Sun - bummer!)

- yep, our insurance went up $500 a year... but we're with USAA, so the damage was minimal - the more i spend the more goes into my Subscriber's Savings Account, and the bigger the dividend [insurance refund] at the end of the year!

- the increase puts us into a mis-balanced home payment - our escrow for taxes and insurance is larger than our principal and interest!

- but i have to admit that for $0.82 a day, the Club Fed flood insurance wasn't too bad (nice piece of mind)...

Yep I am going to try to get a long ride in today. May skip out of work early.

Does not look like there is going to be much riding going on Wed or Thurs.

Yeah, but Katy isn't excatly bulletproof either. I'm in Sugar Land near you, and still have all my precut plywood and clips from last year ready to go if needed....

I sat in on most hurricanes we had over there. I lost my boat to Ivan and after that Dennis came though,I stayed.Then one morning I said It's time to go. I was having a hard time breathing over there as well.Plus my son lives in Sugar Land,plus a few other things.We didn't leave just because of hurricanes but it helped us decide to. We lived on the Alabama,Florida line. It was like a catchers mit for the last 3 years.Plus the insurance was going sky high too. I'm pretty happy here.I've been going to George Bush park riding,where do you go B'Dog ?

You guys really make me feel bad. Tomorrow, Ernesto will be yesterdays news, the sun will be out and it will be 85 degrees. Come on up north where the first hints of fall are already in the air, which means months and months of cold temperatures, and snow. I'll get back to you in January, tell me how bad you've got it then. Not that I'm complaining.;)

I still like it very much up north,with the changing of the colors and a little bit of winter.Some of the winters seemed to never end. Having arthritis and all you do feel better down here,but after living in Chicago for all those years it's hard to beat. George

I also go to Bush sometimes, nice paved trails without a lot of foot traffic. The Bush trails connect with the trail in Terry Hershey Park, but they get a bunch more pedestrians, roller bladers, joggers, etc.

For road riding, I like to load up in the truck and drive out to the Park 'n Ride lot in Fulshear. From there you can find a wide variety of fairly quiet roads to ride.

The Houston Bicycle Club has a bunch of rides mapped out, it's worth the yearly membership just to access the ride library. They also have rides scheduled every weekend, for riders of all levels. Check them out at http://houstonbicycleclub.org/Pages/HomePage.aspx

Unfortunately George, if you live by the Great Lakes there's no such thing as a "little bit of winter".

And when you have been with USAA 40 years, you get a 40% increase in your dividend.

I meant, that's all I liked was a little bit of winter. I hope we start cooling off here pretty soon.

Twas a bust, very little rain, ~1",and wind is only around 30mph. Instead of riding last night I was busy closing my shutters (accordian shutters are wonderful) but my buddy went and did not even get rained on. I think all of the newscasters were highly disapointed that their disaster did not materialize. I will say after Wilma no one ignores Cat 1 storms anymore, many people were shuttered and there were lines at gas stations and the grocery store was a zoo on Monday. Doesn't look like it will clear out for a ride tonight but should be good for tomorrow.

No doubt, but who really pays for this? That will change eventually.

The weather channel lives for this stuff.

The weather channel I can understand its their business. The local stations are nuts though, you get 24x7 hurricane news, as if the rest of the world does not exist. Similar to what happens in CA when you get an earthquake or chicago for a snowstorm. The problem is that it starts 2-3 days before and lasts 2-3 days after.

Glad to hear that you Florida folks got through the storm without any problems. We are supposed to be in Ocracoke Island, on the coast of North Carolina, for the long weekend, and are closely following the progress of Ernesto. Currently, it looks like we may have to leave Saturday morning, rather than Friday afternoon because of the storm activity. That's not bad. However, there is a small chance that Ernesto will hit the area as a hurricane.

Bicycle content: Assuming we get there, we will be renting two bikes, a trailer, and a Trail-A-Bike for transportation.

PaulH - seems to be the same story as we had could be a Hurricane could be a TS. Problem is you can't take chances, too many people laughed off Wilma last year, just a Cat 1. They were not laughing when it left. Good luck on your weekend.
