Northern California - weekend ride reports - where'd ya ride?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Went out to visit my brother on the 27th and try my flatlander legs out on some climbs.

Nothing too long. 60 miles and 5300' of climbing.

Roseville -> Auburn ->Foresthill Rd. -> Cool -> Salmon Falls -> Folsom -> Roseville

Every time I ride behind Folsom I am awestruck at the beautiful terrain and cycling that the area has to offer. No wonder Auburn is called the Endurance capital of the world, I would be outside everyday if I had that.

Hamilton. I rode that yesterday.

Was downright pleasant compared to the 37 miles of headwind hell on Mines road.

Now this is more my speed:

Saturday, climb to the no trespassing line on the ground on Mt. Umunhum. Sunday, easy Mt. Eden/Pierce/Hwy 9 to RWG. Monday, climb to Mt. Diablo summit. Pretty productive holiday weekend, if I might add.

Saturday: Diablo repeats - SGR-NGR-SGR. Turned back at Juniper on the last one as the rain was starting to get a little heavier - and descending Diablo on wet roads isn't on my to-do list.

Monday: Sierra & Calaveras with RoboCheme. Calaveras is such a sweet road - very little traffic.

A most excellent ride on Saturday as I did a one way to Davis, 82 miles. Weather was nice at the start, sunny but cool. Awesome tailwinds from Benicia to Vacaville, and discovered another sweet road - Pleasants Valley, seemingly all downhill for miles. Rain was looming but only got sprinkles as I hit Davis. Hooked up with a local for the final 10 or so to Davis which made the end nice as I was a bit tired. Plus when I inquired of a place I could find a Burger and Beer - he directed me to --- Burgers and Brew! Paradise. I had a ride back home - but the train makes a good return option as well - may do that again.

I rode the SRCC's Bad Little Brother (BLB) for the third time. It's the bad little brother to their Terrible Two, and a great tuneup ride for it. 14,500 of climbing and 132 miles. Lots of fun and I was strongest the whole day on the end of the day at Skaggs.
I did that ride as well. Tremendous support by SRCC. Tons of fun, a great route.
Just wish the weather was more co-operative (rain and wind started from Mountain View Rd till we reached Skaggs).
Plan to be back again next year.

Thanks to BF member 4score, I rode 2 new climbs yesterday in Auburn. The first one, Eagles Nest, was a 20% grade. The second one was a bumpy state park road climbing out of the canyon to Maidu Drive. After those two were done I rode Shirland Tract Road for the first time, both directions. The remainder of the ride was spent exploring Auburn trying to find new sufferfest climbs. Nothing I found was long or steep enough to be a sufferfest. The first three climbs were though:p:D:

diablo and Morgan territory for me today. Weather was not cooperative - fun-free descent thanks to fog from just above Juniper to the Ranger Station and a fearsome wind that followed us around the whole route. The descent of MT was particularly gnarly - first time I've really felt the wind push my wheels around, and they're only 30mm rims.

Had a great ride from Newcastle to Colfax and back via Placer Hills Road. Was caught and passed by another cyclist at the start of a climb eastbound on Bowman Road. I turned the camera on and caught up. Check out this classic cyclist conversation. :D You know how it goes: where ya headed, how far are you going, etc. But the kicker is the "been off the bike for a while, need a good butt kicking". Then he proceeds to make me suffer on Placer Hills Road. Sorry I couldn't give him a good butt kicking, but I'm not a Strong Climber yet.

Another hammer-fest with bigbossman and MarkoPolo - that is, if your definition of "hammering" is riding slowly, stopping often, an extended lunch break, and merciless teasing of each other. Met at Casa de BBM in San Ramon and headed west over Norris Canyon, into Castro Valley, up and over Redwood and Pinehurst to Moraga (and said extended lunch stop), thence circling back to San Ramon. Glorious weather, good friends, a tad over 40 miles - life is good.

This was a very light weekend for riding (considering it didn't rain). Saturday, did Quimby and Sierra Road, with about 39 miles, 4600 feet climbing. I caught a cold either Friday night, or during the ride. Sunday, I was recovering from the cold, but still went out on a ride, up Mt. Eden, Pierce, Saratoga Summit, Toll Road, Hwy 9 to Skyline, then down Page Mill, with another 45 miles, and 3800 feet of climbing. Yes, light riding.

Rode the Mendo Monster Sun. Fabulous day riding in some remote stretches of Mendocino County. The ride is either up or down with a smattering (read, lots of) of pot- holed roads to keep you entertained. The coast section was clear and sunny. Heard talk that only about 150 riders took part in the ride.

By the finish I was glad not to have to see the image of Boris Karloff at the road junctions. Glad I did this one. 98 miles, 9500+/- climbing.:D

I climbed Snows Road in Camino. According to this (http://www.sierraflow.com/Ride%201%20Salmon%20Prospector%20Lotus.htm) site, it is rated the toughest climb in El Dorado County, with grades up to 20%. I had delayed attempting this climb for months because I can honestly say I've finished every road climb I've ever started, and I didn't want to break that streak by having to do the "walk of shame" because I have a fat ass. :D

I was going to wait until I lost 20 more pounds, but I'm too impatient. I've been wanting to climb this since last year.

Full ride report, pictures, and my usual sufferfest video are here: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php/744181-Snows-Road-climb-question?p=12807198&viewfull=1#post12807198

After Saturday's sufferfest on Snows Road (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php/744181-Snows-Road-climb-question), I went up to Nevada City yesterday to watch and record the Nevada City Bicycle Classic criterium. I brought my heavy, low-end Trek 7000 WSD hybrid with rack, rack trunk, lights, and kickstand so I could carry my extra cameras, stuff I bought, and swag. I climbed about 720' just riding around trying to map out the course and find the best spot to record from.

Since I had another 2 hours before the start of the first race, I decided to explore Nevada City's climbs. Right away I found Red Dog Road, which was a long climb with grades up to 17%. It was a real sufferfest due to the bike I was riding.

After watching and recording the Masters men 35+/45+ 1,2,3,4 and Women's Pro 1,2,3 races, I was motivated to do another 1,200' of climbing. This time I found Willow Valley Road, which is another long climb with grades up to 15%. It also turned into a sufferfest near the end. Since I didn't know how long the road was, I turned around when the road leveled out right before another steep section. When I got home and looked at the map on my Garmin Connect page, I found out I was near the top. Damn!

Total amount of climbing recorded was 3,471'. It would be higher, but I forgot to start the timer for a while after watching the races. When I discovered that at the top of Nevada Street, I turned around and climbed back up to the same spot to fix that. :D

Here's the Garmin Connect data. Note the abysmally low average speed, partly due to time spent riding around the course trying to map it out: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/93643130

I did a short ride with a friend in Manteca on Saturday and took Sunday off as it was a bad day symptom wise. Monday, I sucked it up and did an out and back from my place in Modesto to Oakdale. Got in 31 miles. My longest ride (solo or otherwise) since my accident at the beginning of March. I also managed my fastest average speed on the route.

Today, my legs were fighting me. Hope they start behaving because I'm riding the track for the first time this weekend and I'm doing the LSC in Davis in a couple of weeks! (No way I can do the 70 mi I signed up for. I'll be doing the 45 mi route instead.)

The bike route map I got from the Visitor Center in Lucerne, on Clear Lake, calls it the Scotts Valley Loop (#2) - at the northwest corner of Clear Lake. This is it, at mapmyride: http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/fullscreen/8034460/

I did the full ride once, but only really liked the roads on the first half, so I do just that, out and back. Per the mapmyride page, my route is ref. pts. 19/20 .. 31 (where the pic was taken - at Blue Lake - a fishing/resort area) directly to 35 .. 37 to 1 .. 6 and then double back. The vast majority of roads are very lightly traveled, have rolling hills, and are through farmland in Scotts Valley and Bachelor Valley. The only section (about 2+ miles) that goes along HWY 20 is freshly paved and has a relatively debris-free medium-width shoulder.

Clear Lake is northwest of Sac. on HWY 20, east of HWY 101 and west of I-5, and quite a (car) ride from the Sierra Foothills.

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=clear+lake+ca+map&ll=39.057584,-122.829895&spn=1.332943,2.886658&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&gl=us&z=9

There is a yearly ride in October, the Konocti Challenge, many routes of which partly or entirely circle Clear Lake itself. I need to work up to those kinds of distances - not this year..

Nice! Indeed you did - where was that? I started the climb with Ygduf, milliron and ericm979 - but they might have been too fast to snap ;)

Since Ygduf was on a mission for a threepeat, and I've had my fill of Diablo these last two months (8 climbs since the start of May), I did a nice loop from home to Diablo, then down through Blackhawk to Norris Canyon. There was an annoying headwind up that little climb that made for more suffering that it should. The eastbound descent of Norris was fun though, which was quickly balanced by the less fun experience of Crow Canyon to Castro Valley. Once I hit Redwood Rd, I made a quick pitstop at the Golf Course for a bottle refill and to chow down a honey stinger waffle. (Dayum those are good) I got a second wind going back up Redwood, climbed to Skyline and then home via Pinehurst - 82miles and a hair over 8,000ft.

My legs were feeling pretty good by the end, despite starting off a little stiff - I'd done some circuits with the Grizzly Peak Cyclists on Thursday and that trashed my legs better than any of the other rides I've done in some time.

You can blame mellum76 for my shoes - an offer I can't refuse. It's true what they say - those S-works shoes do rock. Also met up with brentley at the top of Diablo who was sporting some very nice white Bont shoes. I draw the line at white bibs- at least those with white panels where it counts...if you get my drift. Never a good move.

BTW, you should check out Robocheme's new outfit soon - the all white look is spreading.

At the top of the Newcastle Road climb, I spotted three cyclists finishing their descent of Indian Hill Road. I noticed a Folsom Bike kit and a beard, and I thought "That must be JoelS". I bunny-hopped the curb and hauled ass over to the Valero just as they arrived. I yelled "Are you JoelS?" Right away he knew who I was, even though we've never actually met. :D

While one of the riders was in the store, JoelS and the other rider were nice enough to let me take this picture:

Here's my video of Hayes Drive, the last part of Newcastle Road, and Crater Hill Road. JoelS makes his appearance at 2:45. I got dropped at Ophir Road, but it was fun while it lasted! :D

After that I climbed Chili Hill, Crater Hill, Bald Hill, and Baxter Grade. By the time I got to Baxter it was getting hot, so it became a sufferfest.

I noticed my rear tire going soft on the gradual descent of Mt. Vernon Road. Luckily there was a nice shady private road to pull off onto, as there was no safe place to work on my bike on that part of Mt. Vernon.

The flat was caused by a tiny thorn that somehow made its way through the so-called flat resistant Specialized tire AND a Stop Flats tire liner. We have some tough thorns!

What I hope to become some day when I lose the rest of this weight :D:

NO ONE KNOWS THE SECRET DIABLO SPY CAM LOCATIONS!!!

Diablo was thick with riders this morning... lots of Markleeville trainers. I got about 20 or 30 spycam photos on my blog.

Ha! Nice, you caught me:

One of these riders is closer to his lactate threshold than the other three. Can you tell which one, boys and girls?
