They may just be finishing. I wonder if it rained a little on them. It is raining over here.

Oh..I hope not....

No rain. Some fog up into Ramona, then sunny from there.

I just got home (I made a last minute decision to do the full century). We had a lot of off bike time due to flats, aid stations, regrouping, etc. At one point we had ridden for 3 hrs and were off the bike for 2!! Tiff was doing fine when I last saw her about mile 80. Unfortunately I had to forge on ahead of the group because my back was starting to tighten up on me each time we stopped.

BTW no rain during the ride at all. Just hills...lots of hills. And I wanted to murder the City of Poway traffic engineer by the end of the ride. I hit EVERY red light I could in the last 10 miles.

Flats, either in the group, or helping others who had flats and didn't have tubes, didn't know how to use CO2, etc.

That's why the BF crew is the bestest to ride with. They rock! I'd like a count of how many times Matt said the word "burrito" over the course of the century. :D

i can tell you from first hand experience that that is good advice! even though i had practiced at home.... the first time i had to change a flat out on my own (only carried one tube at that time).... i ruined the tube trying to inflate it and had to be rescued! now i carry at least 4 cartridges and 2 tubes! if i had more room.... i'd probably carry more

It wasn't anyone in our group!!. But you just shake your head when you are maybe 15 miles into a ride, and when you ask someone if they need help, and they say "I need a tube!". What are these people thinking?

Ok, here's a ride report. Arrived early and got parking across the street in the paved lot from where the BF people were meeting. Kept on eye on the lot, no one showed, couple people dropping off, it got to be about 10 til, so I made sure I had everything and rolled over to the start line. They gave some advice about some corner and descent on highland valley, and started us.

As I was rolling out, I checked the parking lot one last time, and 3-4 people were there including jschen. I yelled and waved. Figuring they'd roll soon and catch me on the first climb. Didn't happen.

The first climb seemed to take awhile, I have a powertap now, so I just guaged my effort and held it to 200-250 watts for the duration. When your 210lbs and have about 30lbs of bike with water spares, etc, that equates to about 6-7mph. Not bad, but I only passed like 2 people on the climb and most were rolling by me slowly. After the climb we got to gather at the top of the hill and wait for escort on the 67. The descent/climb into Ramona was fun, hit 47 somewhere on it, and was cruising right along. Skipped the first rest stop as I had plenty of water on me, and my malto bottle was full. Highland Valley road wasn't bad, the only problem was descending with people that thought they were fast descenders and would stay out to the left. One guy almost got an elbow at 35. :) Please, on rides like this, unless you're passing, stay to the right.

I stopped at the second rest area for a minute or so to refill the malto bottle. Then headed into Escondido, more climbing, and almost missed the Citrus turn off. Had a minor incident on Citrus when a car came within 6" as he buzzed me. Caught him at the light and exchanged a few words, I wanted to rip him out of his car and smack him around a bit, but restrained myself to cursing him out. He tailed the group for awhile taking pictures and eventually drove off.

The coast went by fast, 25+ through that part. The next real climbing was on El Norte and then on El Camino Real, of course there were 3-4 miles of headwinds on San Dugito, no wonder I can usually blast that road at 25+, I was struggling to maintain 18-19 there. At the last rest stop around 85 miles or so, I was at 5 hours ride time, figuring hey, just one more hour to go. NOT.... It was uphill from there into Poway. Once in Poway, I was cruising down Pomerado hitting all the _GREENS_ with a tailwind, 200 watts had me doing 28-30, did the turn around, smiled for the camera, came back up community into the wind where the same 200w had me running 21-22. Here's the output from the powertap, this thing is too cool.

863 max watts
190 average watts
47.6 max speed
16.3 average speed
136 average HR
87 average cadence
ride time: 6:33

Climbing according to routeslip 6518.

I hung around for a bit, collected the T-shirt, then called Jschen, they were around mile 80, so I didn't stick around much longer.

Thanks, Mark Wow -That ride sounded tough! And I still don't know how your bike works exactly. I would think it would be way tougher on a climb. :)

Not really. Climbing boils down to power to weight. I could put out 200-250w all day, but on some hills that would have me doing 10, others it has me doing 6. The _ONLY_ thing I can't do is stand and hammer. Of course, if you tried standing every hill, you'd wear out on an upright. The biggest advantage of the recumbent is superior aerodynamics, 200 watts had me moving at 23+, where it'd take 300-350 on a regular bike. I'm 210 lbs, so I climb slow on a regular bike also, and if I climbed fast at my weight, I'd have to push 500 watts. I did that a few times on short rollers to keep from getting dropped, or on highland valley to stay ahead of a guy that was a pain to pass going over a roller, where I hit 863. A pro like Lance or Floyd can put out 350-400 all day, I'm going to be happy with my 250, and work on bringing it up to 300.

Was the elevation really 8600+??????

I can't really say how accurate that number is. Normal GPS readings for altitude aren't that accurate. MotionBased says their number is more accurate because they cross-reference the waypoints against a database of surveyed altitudes. But the most accurate is a GPS with barometric compensation, like the newer Garmin's. I think blue_nose had one of those, and it woule be interesting to see what his says.

That out of the way, this ride had tons of rolling ups and downs. Plus headwinds. And rolling hills AND headwinds (Palomar Airport Road by the time we got there).

I was there too. Great day for a bike ride. Started off a bit cool but immediately warmed up about half way up the first grade. I spent the entire time chasing a couple friends who were training for a double century. You wouldn't recognize me because I looked like every other guy there on a litespeed, but if you saw a guy about 6 feet 6 inches on a red size 74 frame, well I was the slow, tired, out-of-breath guy behind him. :p
