General Cycling Discussion - I had a bike wreck last Wednesday (08/23)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I woke up Wednesday morning @ 5:30 & decided to go for a ride before work. I made sure the Colnago was ready to ride, got dressed, kissed my wife good morning & headed out at 6:15am.

I live in downtown Dallas, and headed West on a 4-lane 1-way street on my way to a hike/bike trail. The right lane is a bus lane, so I was riding in the lane immediately to its left, so as to not slow down the buses. With one block left of the bus lane, I decided to move into it, since the closest bus was more than a block behind me, and there were cars behind me wanting to get past. I knew that the bus lane wasn't as smooth as the rest of the street, due to the Texas heat combined with the weight of the bus traffic. I didn't realize that the bump down the center was actually a curb-height ridge until it had taken the Colnago out from underneath me as I was trying to move laterally across it. The next thing I knew, I was lying in the street with scraped right arm & leg, and had smacked my head on the pavement rather hard. Since I could see the buss was now barreling down at me, I quickly got up, grabbed the bike, and moved to the sidewalk. Not one person at the bus stop where I had crashed said a word to me or offered assistance. Everyone averted their eyes from me or buried their noses in their newspapers.

Since I had hit my head, I decided to head back home. Had I just fallen and had scrapes on my arm & leg, I'd have continued on my ride. I straightened the handlebars & rode home. I fest above my glasses as I rode, and my fingers came away with blood. My odometer turned over to 1 mile as I arrived at my door.

I woke up my wife and she helped me undress & clean out my wounds. I had really bad road rash on my right arm, just below the elbow. I had road rash on my right calf which just missed my tattoo. I also had a gash over my right eve from the prescription insert of my riding glasses:

Since my arm & shoulder hurt like hell, I called my boss & told her about the accident & that I wasn't going to wrk that day. I figured that my injuries weren't bad enough to go to the ER, but that I should probably see a doctor. I called my doctor as soon as his office opened and was able to get in to see his physician's assistant at 8:45am.

The PA cleaned my head wound a little better, and put better tape on it than we had at home. She also dressed my arm wound. I got a tetanus shot, prescriptions for Lortab & bacitracin, and an order to go get my arm x-rayed.

I had to wait until Thursday afternoon to get the results of the x-ray. I have a non-displaced fracture of the end of the humerus. I made an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon for Friday afternoon. I also got my prescriptions filled (my arm didn't really start hurting until I'd found out I'd broken it).

Friday afternoon I learned from the orthopedic surgeon that I had sheared off the bulbous knob on the end of my humerus:

The red line depicts where the separation occurred.

He put my arm in an immobilizer (a sling that has a strap around my torso), and told me he wants to see me again this coming Friday (9/1) for more x-rays. He expressed concern for my elbow, but since I had full range of motion with it, he didn't look too closely at it. It's been hurting ever since.

Essentially, I'm off the bike(s) for the next 9-10 weeks.

With a little bit of luck you should heal up fine in due course. Was the bike damaged?
One thing I don't understand is if it was a 4 lane one way street and you were in the second lane from the right, why were the cars behind you? Couldn't they have simply changed lanes and passed you?

Agh. Sorry to hear about that, hope the recovery goes quickly and well!
But.. ah, how's the bike?

Sorry about your accident. That could of happened to all of us. Was your bike damaged too? Looks like your helmet didn't do much to help you with the head injury...assuming you were wearing one?

Bike damage: chip in paint on down tube where front brake hit frame, front wheel is slightly out of true (still passes between brake pads easily).

I forgot to mention, I also have a bruise on my chest from where I fell on my mp3 player. The protective rubber cover peeled off, and two sides are rather scraped up, but it still plays just fine.

Yes, I was wearing a helmet. As far as I can tell, the helmet made no contact with the road, either because of the uneven surface or because I instinctively tried to keep my head up when I fell. I'm just glad my Rx lens didn't shatter into my eye.

As for traffic behind me not coming around, either they were going to be turning right within a few blocks, or the other lanes were too full for them to get around me quickly, I kinda stopped paying attention to them once I fell. I do remember that only two cars went by after I moved over, so it's not like I had a whole string of cars behind me.

Yeah, typing one-handed kinda suks right now. I did pick up a USB finger trackball (http://us.st11.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/buyextras_1912_67553856) on Saturday so that I don't have to learn how to use a mouse left-handed. I take it with me to work so I can be productive there, too.

I had a similar injury, though not related to cycling. I now have a stainless spike jammed into the left humourous, with a curved disk at the top. Seems like these replacement ball joints never work out like the original equipment.

Best of luck.

We as a society are conditioned to look the other way and not get involved. Plus, I'm sure you were embarrassed about falling, so those people at the bus stop didn't want to embarrass you more.

At least they could have held up score cards rating your fall. Sounded like a 6 or 7 to me. :D

Sorry to hear about the crash dude. Hope the shoulder and the elbow heal up quickly for you, and at least this didn't happen to you in the spring right before the full riding season started. Granted, in Texas, we have two riding seasons, First Summer (aka Spring) and Second Summer (aka Fall) with Ultra Summer in between. If you ever want to grab a beer and talk bikes while you're healing up, send me a PM. ;)

That central bulge in the pavement between the wheel ruts in the bus lane cleaned me off my bike two years ago, the last good road crash I've had in a while (although I was actually on my MTB with slicks at the time).

It's brutal that the pavement can bulge that much without cracking to give any visual warning... I was actually lying on the road with no idea why I went down until I walked back and looked.

A few months later, the bulge got so bad that it started being scraped by the undercarriages of lowered sports cars, and now it's pretty hard to miss... they really ought to repave it though one of these days.

Wow, get well soon. That's the damndest place I've ever heard of to put a curb.

People around here wouldn't pull that ****. I swear, is Texas just out to get the cyclist? It's easier for a cyclist to get arrested in Texas than a serial killer.

Sorry you're hurt. Get back as soon as you can but not until it heals.
