General Cycling Discussion - Well it finally happened..

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I was "taunted" while riding home with the Mrs. Some jerk in a truck threw some large mardi gras beads at me... hard. They missed but I cringe every time I mentally here the sound of the beads when the hit the ground next to me... they were the large ones. Would have been ugly if they would have hit either myself, my wife, or our bikes.
I do not like this island, and I do not like texas.

You must be in Galveston...
I avoid that place during Mardi Gras. Actually, come to think of it i have not been to Gal Ilse in over 5 years. (And I only live an hour away.)
I lived in Galveston for five years.
Hated it from Spring to Fall, when the beaches and roads were crammed every weekend.
I avoided Mardi Gras. Just not my type of event.
As far as riding on the island, it was pretty boring. No hills, but sometimes strong winds. And during tourist season, carloads of idiots to scream at you.

If you are looking for good, friendly Mardi Gras parades, go to Houma, La. The krewes are a bunch of party animals, to be sure, but the parades are family oriented, and a lot of fun. Lafayette has some fair parades and great riding.
Work takes me to Galveston on a regular basis, and it sucks during high tourist times.

Galveston... ugh! That place is a magnet that draws in every troublemaker from miles around. You don't need to be on a bike to be hassled there, that's for sure.

Well.....
since it IS an island with nice weather all year round and lots of tourists to support the economy and is mostly flat....
why not ban motor vehicles? Require everyone to get around by trolly, bicycle, skateboard, etc. There is an island in Michigan that does this- Works pretty well for them.
Ban motor vehicles in Texas?????

Bike haters are everywhere. When I was cycling in Northern Canada, a passenger in a half-ton threw a beer bottle at me. He aimed pretty acurately. I reached up with my left hand and tried to catch the bottle or deflect it. I was hoping to catch it and fling it back at his truck, but I deflected it into the ditch on the right -- at least it didn't break on the road.

Maybe he just wanted you to show him your tits:p
Yep it's galveston.
We've been here since the first part of December. Have about a month left. You can split the island in half... from where the sea wall ends going East... you could slide that into the sea... from where the sea wall ends going West is beautiful... The ride West is flat as a pancake with a huge shoulder. Once you get 5 miles past the sea wall the traffic drops to a ca every 10 minutes or so. I've ridden to the pass several times and have had a blast every time.
The local bike shop is an absolute joke... It's a schwinn dealership from WAY BACK.... They sell basically comfort bikes.. the accessory dept is BEHIND the counter and consists of stuff from the 70's. Their used bike section is nothing but beat up kmart bikes. Alot of people ride on the island, but not enough. The people who do ride seem to just stay in town. I've never seen a rider west of the sea wall.. and as I said, that's the best riding.
Funny place this Island....
I'm counting the days till we leave LOL

Does it still double as a lawn mower store?
I bought my first serious bike there. Didn't know what I was doing, and let them sell me a bike about 1.5" too large.
I eventually went to a bike shop that was up the road toward houston. Don't remember the name or location. Haven't been there in almost 15 years.
I found riding early on Sunday mornings to be OK.
I don't miss Galveston at all.
