Hello All,

Well my wife and I decided to do something to help shed a little weight that we had put on since quitting smoking a little over a year ago. So yesterday we treated ourselves to a pair of Trek 7500's and will be doing the commute thing daily (weather permitting).

We had decided on the hybrid route for a couple of reasons:

(1) Work is not very far away, so speed wasn't a big issue.

(2) The roads around here are pretty bad in places and often times there is absolutely no room for a bicyclist to safely ride so one has to keep an eye out for cars and cut over onto the grassy shoulder.

(3) There are some rather interesting meandering dirt trails around here that are fun to ride on. Nothing extreme -- I've ridden them frequently with my single-speed, fat-tired beach cruiser.

But all in all we thought that with having to ride on less-than-great road surfaces quite a bit we would be better off with something that was comfortable, but which could take a little abuse without too much complaint.

Anyway, I sort-of bumped into this forum last night while doing a bit of searching. It's a pleasure to find you all and to read all of the great advice the more experienced folks (which is just about everyone compared to me!) have posted.

Regards,

Gordon

P.S. - danka24 (Dan?) Thank you for the PM greeting. Oh yes, you said to include my DOB. It's 12/26/57 (yes, I'm turning into an old fart!)

Hi Matt,

You are pretty close. We are in "old" Humble. Our street is near the intersection of Main and N. Houston, just to give you an idea. My son and I rode up to the bike store in Kingwood today. On the way up we took the 494 bypass to Kingwood Drive and then followed that to W. Lake Houston. On the way back we rode S. on W. Lake Houston and then took 1960 back to Humble.

And you know what? There are lots of places on that route that are really touch-and-go for bike riders! Places where there is no shoulder and the cars have to pass quite close to you. It's a bit nerve-racking at times!!
