Cyclocross - Can you race cross in the lower categories with disc brakes?

Hi.

I'm thinking about getting a commuter bike. I'm thinking maybe a cyclocross bike, so I could try out some of the local trails and maybe even give cyclocross racing a whirl. Now I know the UCI has banned disc brakes, but I kind of thought the ban applies only to the more elite levels. So that's the question: can a newb show up with discs and race in some sort of Novice or Beginner or Cat 5 class?

I'm going to say, yes. You can ride a mtn bike in those categories, so I can't imagine you can't run discs.

How about a recumbent or an eBike (electric assist) ?

I'd love to see some of these "recumbents are SO much faster and more comfortable" weenies come out and ride some 'cross. Bring it ON!

I'd like to see a tandem cyclocross category -- synchronized dismounts!

The no disc rule only applies to UCI races - and even then, only to the UCI licensed catagories at those races. If you don't have a UCI license, I think you're ok.

Oh, man that'd be a hoot. Pilot swings leg over the TT stoker over the back, step, heave, run. Stoker guides bike on the remount as the pilot swings up over the bars with a hand on the saddle. He takes control, stoker hops on. Jeebus, so much to go wrong and wow, just beautiful when it goes right. That'd be stark raving madness. Why don't they do it.
