She waged "biological warfare" on the course at Middle bury Gap. Read more here.

I think she was off to the UMCA time trials in Illinois? Idaho?

Machka and Rowan are currently making their way to Iowa on the border of Iowa and Illinois, near Davenport Iowa.
Currently they were in Pennsylvania in the rain.
She is planning to ride the 24hr ride http://www.big-dogs.org/umc/umca24/24Reg.aspx

As far as the BMB is concerned, she ate some Chinese food that had been sitting out for several hours.
It had been made for some of the early riders and was left out without refrigeration.
Some of the other riders did the same and they all came down with a measure of sickness.
Some dropped out as a result.
Machka barfed all the way up one of those Vermont mountain roads.
She dropped out just before the route crossed over into Canada.
Rowan joined her in dropping out too.
They caught a ride for a couple hundred km and then rode all the way back to Boston.
By then her strength had returned.
Altogether they rode about 900 km, but of course, they did not complete the ride as prescribed.

Machka is in Le Claire, Iowa getting ready for the UMCA 24-hour. :) I've been travelling and cycling around the US ... and yes, I was quite sick on the BMB as has been linked and mentioned above.

Great to hear from you and I'm happy that you are doing OK! I do have one question though...you got sick and didn't save me the big pieces?

I came into the Brattleboro/fried-rice control (Machka came in just a little while later), and knew I should try to fuel up, so I tried to make myself eat some of the fried rice, but it was just too hot out and so I only ate a couple of bites. Lucky me. Felt pretty queasy for the next eight hours to Middlebury, so was making very slow headway. Lost hours of time as a result, so was hitting controls with steadily less time to spare. Got two hours sleep at Middlebury and left an hour after it closed. Saw Machka at Ludlow, Middlebury, and again at Rouses Point, where she looked decidedly green. Riding into Huntingdon meant several hours of riding directly into the sun, on shadeless roads. Very high water consumption. Despite what the cue sheet said, there were a few places to get water, though the first place I watered-up was from a nice Canadian who was sitting on his porch. At Huntingdon, we heard that Machka had DNF'd. Next time I saw her was when she and Rowan passed me about 25 miles out of Boston. I hopped onto their little paceline -- I think they were kind enough to slow down a little bit, since I was struggling to hang on at the awesome pace of about 12 mph -- and we all tagged into Boston, arriving just as it was getting to be dusk. That was the longest 25 miles I've ever ridden, but it made it a whole lot easier to have Rowan and Machka to roll along with and laugh with. Thanks very much for letting me hang on!

...and people wonder why I'm so paranoid/anal about food being left out....

That really sucks to have something like that ruin what you've been training all year for, but at least you seem to be taking it in stride. Always PBP next year :).

Glad to help you out there! :)

Unfortunately I ate TWO LARGE PLATES of that chicken rice. I was hungry!! But even as I was eating it, I couldn't help but think that the rice tasted very dry and a bit "off". It's the only thing I can think of which would have caused a problem. The ride had been going well to that point, and to that point I had been eating my usual riding foods (i.e. various packaged cereal-type bars and bananas) ... nothing unusual or different at all. I had been consuming enough food, enough liquid, and enough electrolytes ...... but after that chicken rice ...... BLECK!! :(

This is one reason I am a very picky eater while on the bike. I got sick 113 miles into a 400K brevet earlier this year because of roadside food. I suffered for 30 miles and then started to feel better. After that experience I promised myself to stick to my established diet while riding.
