Mountain Biking - I'm a roadie... convince me

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Convince me to try Mountain biking. My friend says he prefers it to road biking and has invited me to go ride one of his bikes. Now, I probably will do this, but convince me to get into mountain biking anyway.

Take your friend up on his offer and that'll convince you:D
Just think about how much you love road riding and how many things you enjoy about it. Now figure that you are going to find just as many things to love about mountain biking (if you give it a fair shot). I go through stages where I prefer road riding to mountain biking, then I go through stages where I prefer mountain biking to road riding. It's always great to have choices. It's very rare that I am burnt out on both disciplines.

I guess it all depends on what style of mtbing your planning on getting into. Here is the result of a short search.

I have to agree with the adventure aspect of mtbiking. And I get a better upper body workout on some of the more technical trails. Surface conditions, such as pavement verses loose dirt, gravel, sand, can really increase the physical exertion level. I think this was the most noticeable differece for me when I first started XC riding. Its tough, and like the other poster stated, you have got to be thinking all the time, no zoned out, type rides out in the boonies.
You cant go wrong giving it a try.
I think pictures speak louder than words.

Do you get to ride like this on a road bike?

You're way too much of a candybutt to shred the gnar. You just stay on your road bike.

Mountain biking can free your soul in many differnet ways. Ride a new trail for an adrenline rush, ride the same one for a calming and relaxing time.

What would you rather see, veiws like the pictures above or white line on the edge of the pavement?
It is much more fun going MTB. Give it a try and I don't think you will go back.

I hate to say it but that is not always true. I have had some amazing days out on the roadie.
Convince you? Pfft, silly roadie. :)
yeah don't bother, we don't need any more people on the trail.

Road and mtn are different. It's a different energy, a different way of looking at the ride. I've always found that road was me vs. other riders or gravity/wind, but mountain biking is me with the trail as opposed to being against it. Sometimes it's against me, but I'm never against it...

Why should we have to convince you?
Go ride a mountain bike over a mountain and you'll be far more then convinced.

If you have to ask...then you're probably not cool enough to be a mountain biker.

Newbons posting swiped pictures shouldn't inspire you to experience what they imagine mountain biking to be. Why should they, when the newbons posting the pictures haven't even experienced what they are trying to "sell" as mountain biking.
Take a few rides with folks who "know" and you can decide for yourself.

Well said. I do both. Both are fun in their own way. It's not for someone else to convince you.
Plus you can do WICKED EXTREME tricks on mtb's that will impress the ladies!
Just don't ride with any of those "bike snobs". They'll ruin it for you, trust me. They enjoy going around thinking they are better than others, because they drive a porsche and have a 2000+ dollar bike, and can afford to fly across the world to ride epic trails. They also enjoy trolling forums to help themselves feel better about their abnormally minute penis.

Usually those bike snobs have alot more experience. Pictures are kind of a weak way to get one's self psyched to ride.Plus would you want to learn things from a complete newbie or someone with more experience?

Well heck. I finally got a real life "coach". I met this guy who used to always race in Dowinieville and he is going to start taking me out. :)
Ewwwwwwwww! That means my bike is going to get dirty!!!!! :(

So does your giant penis get more use than his minute one?
You bike will get dirty, but it will be your first step into a much larger world where biking involves the use of other muscles and other parts of your brain.
Enjoy.

I love Hank.
It's quite sad when you come to a mtb forum only to get morbid enjoyment out of rattling people's chains. I'm surprised you've gone through life without help for that inferiority complex. I'll pray for you, as obviously no one ever has.
My only goal in life is not to amount to an anal retentive old coot, such as yourself. As long as I've achieved that, I've become more than you'll ever be.
Goodnight! enjoy the ban. Good luck with getting around the ban, see you in a few :D
socially ********
Have a great night!
Your trolling speaks wonders of your social skills!
Don't worry, I will now that you're banned.
I love Hank.
and you love posting in the mtb forum all day long, and being the poster child for marzochi too!

I wanna come to downieville sbw!!! lemme come!! please, please, please. I'll drop the money to fix my bike if I can come!!
Your idiocy apparently knows no bounds.
Almost as silly as the dipsh|t "mod" who wrote "you were warned to be nice" in their weaksauce attempt at a ban. Talk about censorship and double standards.
p.s. A decent goal in life for you should be to get an education and get a decent job and stop mooching off of your poor parents already.
Wait till your isp gets contacted and your blacklisted. Then your going to need to find alternate ways for your trolling fetish :D

i want to start up a Hank Rearden/Rank Hearden/justsomeguy appreciation thread.
You are even more clueless than I gave you credit for.
And that's saying a lot!
You know what's saying alot, the fact you can't take the ban like a man and follow the forum guidelines(FWI-harassing members is against the guidelines). I mean look at you, your pathetic, you have nothing better to do at your age? damn, I'll give you a little bit of pity.

Sorry newbon, writing the truth is not harassment.
If you're uncomfortable about people telling the truth about your pitiful life, then you should refrain from posting.
Or you can continue to go crying to a "mod" every time your fragile self is wounded by people who are merely noting your undebatable worthlessness.
p.s I'm peeking in here while rendering some stunning video. It's a hilarious diversion while those video bits and bytes are crushed.

OOh yes! more of that stunning video of bikes falling downhill! That's gunna be a crowd pleaser!
A 40+ year old who sits on a forum talking down on everyone for not being as smart, rich, or as fortunate as them isn't pitiful. But I am. Ouch, the irony.

That is another lie.
Apparently it makes you feel better about yourself but nonetheless, it's just another lie.
Oh well.

You're older than me, 30? 40? does it matter? Either way your a pitiful sack of meat.

I need to hit up Downieville, the guys at the shop keep going on and on about how it kicks the crap out of the trails here.

Aww, maybe this could be our group ride?
Serenity has no desire to come over to montara, but I'll drive anywhere within reason.

Yeah it might work. We would have to plan it a couple weeks in advance so I can get the day off though.

Clueless to the bitter end, eh? Wow.
The lie centers around this bit (just quoting your awkward use of the language here):
"talking down on everyone"

Pheard, you sound like a mod with a power trip.. but youre just a crybaby tattletale.

I'm loving how all of the members who've previously been owned by hank are sucking his e-penis.
I apologize for posting a few pics I enjoyed, from other peoples mtb adventures. I'm so wrong for doing that.
I'm loving how all of the members who've previously been owned by hank are sucking his e-penis.
Well, if its all the members who've previously been owned by hank, that would include you.
Because I think you are a complete tool, means I am sucking Rank's e-penis? What is your obsession with the penis anyway?
Okay, time to lock it up for the night. We'll revisit it in the morning.
