Taerom, how's the road riding up in the UP? May have to make a getaway jaunt up there next summer with some other forum folks if it's worth the trip.
Hmmm, I'm not too involved in the roadie scene, but I do know there are a few of them were I am from. There are a lot of really nice scenic roads around here, especially in the Keweenaw Peninsula, so I imagine it has to be pretty good.

Not in the UP but about thirty miles to the west - Chequamegon Bay. Not nearly as much Lake Effect as you folks have. They got doors on the second floor there? I went camping in the Sylvania (sp?) Mts there one winter - an experience I'm not inclined to repeat. I'd love to see that area in summer - at least you have hills!

Does living in Minneapolis now, but used to go to Tech, orginally from Muskegon count? I miss the UP and riding. The Twinc Cities have a lot of group rides and races, but Copper Country is awesome for riding both on and off road.
I just moved to Michigan last year..only been out of the middle of the state (TriCity area of midland, bay city, saginaw), once to Traverse City. Couldn't ride then, injured myself the week before:(

I have one of the few cars in France that has a bumper sticker on it. "Say ya to the UP, heah."Guess, the phrase is doubly confused here.

I married a Yooper, hang out at my in-laws in Marquette all the time, and even get up your way once or twice a year for work. I suppose that makes me an honorary Yooper, doncha know, eh? Have you checked out the cinnamon rolls at the Hilltop in L'Anse, yet?
You really should consider taking up with the roadies. My father-in-law reports that, due to the upcoming elections, there are many miles of freshly paved asphalt highways and byways, many of them with nice, wide shoulders. Plan to make it up there before the snow flies and check out of couple of them personally.

Actually I'm a troll from the lower P. My mom's family was from the UP (Pickford, south of the Soo) and I've spent a lot of happy time up north. Currently, I live in Lansing and spend 5 days a month in Traverse City, which is sorta up north. But you won't find a prouder Michigander than myself!

I spent a week in Elk Rapids, just North of Traverse this summer. Can't find a better place as far as I'm concerned. Wish I would have had the time to ride, cause it was awesome there. I can only imagine how nice da UP is.

I'm going to Calumet to ride next month. Can't freeeeeakin' wait.
Where does the Saturday ride meet in Houghton??
I'm not sure of any rides on saturdays. There are cycling club group mountain biking rides on thursday evenings, occaisionally on mondays or tuesdays. If you stop by the local shop, Cross Country Sports, I'm sure you can find some people to ride with on the weekends.
I wasn't going to say anything, but since it's a small crowd, my Dad's in the Gladstone/Escanaba area. I'm hoping some year to do the Delta County Century when it doesn't conflict with my autocross schedule, which it has for 3 straight years now.

Grew up in Manistique, went to Houghton for college (didn't ride then). We had 270+ inches of snow my senior year there and I don't think it was possible to ride before school got out in May anyway! ha Had some great times though and remember some epic camping and ski trips to the porkies and Mont Ripley. Unfortunately there was no Mt. Bohemia when I graduated (96).
Got into the roadie scene when I moved to Midland and now I find myself in epic roadie land in Portland Oregon. Highest per capita racing participation in the country by a mile. Still, I would love to ride the quiet hilly roads around Houghton someday....sigh...

Im a first year student at Northern (Marquette) originally from chi. suberbs and love the roads here. Drivers are VERY nice and the shoulders are oflen as wide as the lanes. The hills are fun too. The only downfall i could think of is the options. The U.P. is in the middle of nowhere and the road choices are limited, but it is still a 1000% upgrade from the 'burbs.

I am not from there but had a cabin on the shore of Gitchee Gumee out on the Keweenaw last Aug for a week. We biked almost everyday & it was a blast. We only road cycled. Great rolling rises & reasonable hills & few cars. The views going along the shore out to Copper Harbor are hard to beat. If you want a challenge you can tackle Brockway Mountain.
August is such a great month to go up there. Less flys & it is the persiod meteor shower around the 11th. You can't get much better star gazin then in the U.P. Was my 5th time on vacation up there. It's great.
On our way home to Chicago we rafted on the Menominee (Wildman Whitewater Ranch) & biked a day around there. That was fun too.

The roads are ok up here but pretty rough and many don't have good shoulders. I guess I'm spoiled having grown up in Leelanau county were the road biking is epic. The mountain biking though is some of the best I've sampled anywhere in the country here. Marquette has an incredible network of trails and can be ridden to right from town. Just wish winter would end here now. Don't get me wrong, I love the snow but its time. haha

The UP sucks, don't ever come here.
:D
It only sucks this time of the year. Can't ride on the trails yet, but can't ski/snowboard either. :(
Oh how I wish I Could visit up there more often. My wife and I have been to T.C. once and Mackinac Island once....if we hadn't just bought a house I'd encourage her to find a job up there;)

I lived up there for 3 years at K.I. Sawyer. I had a lot of fun and the people were nice, but it was a bit much for me. We literally had 2 months straight one winter where the ambient temp did not get above 0. Set records for LOW snowfall because Lake Superior was basically frozen all the way across  . I think that was the winter of 94 or 95. I will take the LP, thanks :D

Marquette Mountain is still open. In fact its actually pretty damn good too. Last night I squeezed in 3 hours of backcountry skiing north of town too. Can't fight the weather, might as well enjoy it.
Think the snow at Marquette Mountain might still be decent this Saturday?

I'm sure it will be, there is plenty out there. It is warm today and sunny so it might make it spring conditions (thank god actually, haha). I haven't checked the latest forecast for the weekend though. Originally we were supposed to get another foot of snow.

Hi, where do you backcountry? Is it "under the ropes" at Marquette Mtn. or are there other places? I'm real curious about Marquette regarding backcountry skiing and both road and off-road cycling, I'm from the Midwest originally and thinking of moving back.
Thanks.

Well, its nothing like skiing in the Cascades obviously:D but its pretty decent. North of Marquette near Big Bay there are some good areas that have fairly open wooded hills with ~500-600 vertical feet of skiing. Closer to town there are smaller areas scatter all over between Marquette and Ishpeming. The McCormick Tract wilderness area has some nice little spots too, but require a bit further to ski into them. Probably the best backcountry skiing in the UP is in the Keewenau peninsula and the Porcupine Mountains area in the Western UP. I'd stick the Huron Mtns on there as well which are located near Big Bay, but access is restricted to general public.
Alot of people use a waxless type metal edged ski for hitting up these areas. Think Catamount. Skins are too much of a pain in the but due to the short verticals. I use a set of older Black Diamond Eclipses that I put kick wax on to get around.
Hope that helps shed a bit of light on it.

How in the world could you say that? I was in Chicago for the first 18 years of my life and in marquette for the past year and it has been a 500% upgrade in evry aspect: snowshoeing, mtb'ing, road cycling, xcsking, dh-sking and life in general.
The UP is GREAT, do SO come here!!!

Someone missed the sarcasm.
The point is don't come to the UP which would ruin it for those already there or who have already discovered it.

No, seriously. It's all strip malls, suburban sprawl, and 8 lane highways. Nothing to see here. :D
