Hi to all, great forum. Just want to say hi from S Jersey, then I'll slink back to the 50+ forum. As of tomorrow, I'm two years into that genre. That just doesn't seem right. I better check I gotta be 42, right not 52? Yeh

Always had the typical cheapo dept store MTB and never knew better. My last one was stolen out of my garage, amazingly ran into a slimeball outside a convenience store with it two months later (who said he bought it from a guy for 10 bucks, yeh). He under duress dropped it and ran off, so I got it back albeit trashed. So finally got a decent MTB, my Trek 4500 about 3 months ago. What a difference. This is a nice machine. Just took it back for the free annual service. since cables have stretched, etc. Got it back yesterday, but have been riding the wifes 4300 on the road since rain has dampened the trails.

I typically to do 10- 12 miles jaunts on non-gym days at the local state park, and have put 400+ miles on it so far. Looking for new trails to ride. Now for clipless and a camelback....onward and upward!

Welcome to BikeForums! It looks like the rain will start again on Friday and won't let up.

I understand what you mean about the difference between a department store bike and a decent bike. I couldn't believe the weight difference between my Wal-Mart mountain bike and my 80s touring bike......then I got a 2005 road bike.

Welcome Ken from another South Jerseyan, albeit not as far south as you (Burlington). I ride a roadie and have never been on a cheapie Mtn bike but I am glad to hear you qare enjoying your Trek. It looks like today will be the day to ride, if you don't mind a little wind.

Cheers,

Brian

hi Ken,
good to see another cyclist from cumberland county (i'm from west Vld here). Welcome!
i got my mtb (and 'bent later) from Beacon. both are a world of difference from wally-world bikes.
i feel for you about "removed" (stolen) bikes. if i could see the "person" who got my atala, i would not be base-line either.....
anyway, welcome again, check out South Jersey Wheelmen bike club. there is the Jersey Devel Century (starting in Centerton, NJ - Parvin State Park) in september.
spin safe!

Hi Neighbor!!

Small world, eh. I was born and raised in VLD (east side), and still go there quite a bit, taking the family to visit grandmom.

Got my MTB at Beacon also. I really like Charlie the tech, he and Dave were real helpful. I went back and forth between the Trek and a 06 Rockhopper. Really like the RH, but quite a bit more $, and the punk flat black was a little flashy for a guy my age. Actually the Trek being heavier, felt more "secure" under me, which as a newbie is good.

Do you ever ride at Parvin? I'm there at least once a week. I do some road riding locally (UD Twp) during the week on the wifes 4300. Had to switch to hers, I was wearing down my xc tires really bad.

Take care, Ken
