Mountain Biking - First bike

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

What kind of biking are you interested in?
Either way, I'd highly suggest NOT throwing yourself down whistler on your first ride on your first bike, no matter WHAT bike you end up with.

Ironhorse makes great bikes. You might want to start off with a 7Point3 or 7Point5, they are good and cheap. You also might want to look for used to. Go to www.Pinkbike.com and check out everywhere around you. Since you are from the same area, I can tell you where are some good places.
Check Out Port Coquitluam, Coquitluam, New West Minister, Dealta, North Van.
Also, go check out a local store by Grandvill Island, call Snowcovers and see what they got. You could also go for a Rocky Mountain Switch s1 for $2000.

Well which is it, relative or friend?

why?
I suppose it could be both, at least if you're not from my family.
But why don't you borrow a friends bike and try different things out before you settle on one product? You're making a substantial investment and you should be comfortable with what you purchase beforehand - also make sure you enjoy downhill (I don't)

You never stated a budget.
There is a big difference between a $500 bike and a $2500 one. Narrow down the choices. Give us a price range and the type of riding you intend to do.

Freeride: Kona Stinky $1999

or Kona Coiler $1799

Kona also makes a hybrid bike. It's a cross between XC and Freeride. They call them "backcountry" bikes.
Kona Dawg Deluxe $1899

I recently bought a Kona after reading reviews on the bikes, and after more than just a few members here highly recommended it. So far, its a darn fine bike, but the ultimate decision should be made only after you test ride a few bikes to see what you like.
I would NEVER buy a serious (more than $500) bike without being able to test ride it first. Once you start getting near the $2000 mark, you are talking serious machinery, and serious money. Do yourself a favor and make an appointment with the dealer you choose for a test ride that is long enough for you to get a decent feel for the bike.
