Mountain Biking - Which discs for me?

Looking for some new disc brakes for my bike and I'm wondering which seem to be the best all-around discs for everyday use.

I've had the BB7s for a while now and I'm looking to get something maybe a little easier to adjust and a little sturdier. I've got my eyes on the Avid Juicy 7 with an 8" front and 6" rear.

Center-lock/Shimano is not an option.

Price isn't really a huge deal.

Avid Juicy 7's for everyday use? What do you use them for everyday?

I think he just means for normal use.

bb7's are ridiculously easy to adjust.

I have a Juicy 5 front and BB7 rear on my cannondale, and i really like my Juicy 5's. Powerfull, and easy also easy to adjust.

Wow, I don't know of any brakeset that is easier to adjust than BB7's. For everyday riding they can't be beat. If you want to change for change's sake, I'd go with Hope...just because they're cool.

Hope does have that "bling" factor and they're a good brake, you pay quite a bit for them.

I've always been a fan of Hayes brakes, I've owned 4 different sets and haven't had a problem with any of them. I will say, I did own the comps and they were weak compared to my HFX-HD's, but that was expected.

I had some Maguras and they were good as well.

I ride about 20-30 miles a day on average 5-7 days a week and it just seems I'm always adjusting at a red light or something because of some squeak or the tension feels off or something. I seem to remember it was the same annoying drudgery with cantilever and linear-pull brakes. Maybe I'm just too picky, or insane... it's not like they don't work, it's just that I've always had a problem with bike brakes. Either they're too hard, too soft or they squeak or get bumped out of the sweet spot too easily or something...

hope are supposed to be one of those put them on and forget about them brakes...so that might work...i have had some adjustability problems with my hayes so i dunno about them.

but i would have to say for everday use, and for the price. i think the bb7s would be perfect. although, the second you touch a hydro brake i bet you will never want to go back to mechs.

For all that I've read, Avid Juicy's are the easiest to set up. I love my Juicy 5's. I have used bb5's and really liked them, may get a set for my HT.

How are the Hopes? I've read references that they are tricky to set up but once they are, they are super sweet. Anyone have any feedback on something for XC application?

i have Hope M4 and mini and have not had any problems setting them up, shortening lines, or brake squeal. they have been great on all accords.

Geeee, maybe I should pay a little more attention to my Hayes, but hopefully not get too crazy like chelboed, lol...

If you're having trouble adjusting your BB7 brakes, you should consider going with a coaster brake. If you believe that twisting those little knobs are difficult, I can't wait to see you bleed your brakes.

Hope Mono M4's are what I use and although it may sound fiddly to set Hope brakes up- It ain't. You space the caliper out to the disc by Shims (Washers to you and me) but once set up- They never need adjusting again. I did attempt to once, when I had a spare hour, and finished up putting the same washers back into place. Not bad for 3 years use . Other than changing pads- which is a simple job- and changing the dot 5.1 brake fluid every year-Takes longer to find a mate to help you on this job than doing it- I have not had to adjust these brakes in any way. Mono M4's are probably over the top for XC use, but the mono mini's are light weight and good.

These brakes are used aggressively and do stop us very quickly. The brakes have so much feel in them that they are a dream to use in tricky situations. Mud and wet do not bother then, and although I use the sintered hard pad- There is no disc wear either.

I have had ZERO, NILCH, NADA, NO problems with my Grimeca System 8's
they stop awesome, they have good power, and look nice to boot.
they come with braided lines, and are easy to bleed and fill.
use DOT 3 or 4 fluid, and use the same pads as Shimano XT so no worries about having to find a place to import Grimeca pads from Italy

DON'T GET HOPES!!!!!!!!!

A friend of mine had the big M6s and I hated riding with this kid because his brakes would never shut up, plus he had to bleed them like 5 times in one year. But when they do work they feel AMAZING!

Bottom line is if you get HOPEs you better HOPE they work!!

I have Juicy 5's on my Hardrock and Juicy 7's on my Prophet and if I were buying brakes to replace either it would be Juicy 5's. My 5's seem to have all the stopping power of the 7's but for less $$$. Of course they don't have that cool little red spinning gizmo to adjust pad positioning like the 7's but since I've never adjusted it I don't suppose I would be missing out on much.
