Recreational & Family - How do you define 'recreational cyclist'?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

To me, a recreational cyclist and a tourist are the same thing - ie: someone who rides for fun, fitness and adventure. It doesn't matter whether I am going across town or across the country, it is still a tour. Anyone who isn't a racer or commuter is a tourist, and therefore a recreational cyclist.
I agree with your definition in fact that fits me to a T .As I can't do extended tours 365 days a year I tend to make my day "training"rides into "tours" or adventures and really it is just recreational riding.I am sort of a commuter that commutes away from work as I work at home lol.Of course as my fitness improves they tend to get longer but I don't focus on miles or time just the destination .In fact that may be a major difference between me and a recreation rider in that I never ride just to ride around the block there is always a destination. Also "recreational"rider as it is stereotypically used tends to refer to riders more along the lines Denver has discribed so maybe "tourists "should be viewed as advanced recreational riders .Similar to Chris I may post about my rides fromm time to time in this forum but focus on the recreational aspects not time/milage etc.(though I may attempt to estimate the milage as I don't have a computer)
someone who rides for fun, fitness and adventure That's me!
I started riding because I needed an activity that gets me exercising and one that I like (so I keep doing it). It has been good for my health but my attention is always focused on THE AVENTURE!
I can't go off on an extended tour in China (or even across the state), but I do look for day or weekend rides that are exciting and different - which makes them special.
I think I’ll start another thread about how to do that – I’m sure many of you have ways to make the day and weekend rides special and adventurous.

I like to consider myself an "Enthusiast". I see that as a little more intense than a "recreational" rider. Albeit, I do have fun and use my bike for recreation, but I also work part-time in a bike shop, so it is also a form of income. (So, I can buy more bike parts of course!)
I don't race, but I do commute to work a couple of times a week. I am, first and foremost, a mtn biker, so I use my roadie for training. Training for what? So I don't get killed by my friends on our next mtn bike ride.
