Southern California - Redondo Beach area rides?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hi everyone-
We're coming to SoCal this weekend and bringing the bikes! Can anyone recommend a good 30 - 40 mile ride around the Redondo Beach/Palos Verdes/Torrance area? We are going to do the PV loop one day, looks like it's around 20 miles. Would love to either add onto this or find a second ride to do. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
Thanks much,
Adrian

PV is a beautiful place to ride, you can also shoot north on the beach bike path to ballona creek and cross over into marina del rey. from there you can continue on the path thru venice and santa monica. frm the s.m. pier you can hop up onto Ocean Bl. and tour santa monica, maybe do a lap up San Vicente Bl. into brentwood. from this area you're at the base of the santa monica mtns, so if you feel like doing some climbing you can venture into one of the canyons. there's always PCH north into malibu (watch out for Mel) as well, just wear your helmet. inland from redondo isn't the prettiest area and can quickly put you into some dodgy hoods. since it's labor day the beaches will be packed so the bike path will be crowded once the morning wears on.

Right on, the ride north sounds like a good option. Is there a good alternitive to the bike path?

vista del mar is the road which parallels the beach from ballona creek south into manhattan beach and many riders use this rather than the path. north of ballona you can ride thru the marina and venice off the path too. the bike path in venice is virtually always crowded and slow and twisty to boot. take maybe abbot kinney north to main street to ocean bl. to san vicente bl. (roughly) for a decent route with mostly bike lanes and slightly fewer lights and stop signs than some of the other roads by the beach.

As much as I've always love the ride from Redondo to Santa Monica, during a holiday weekend it's going to be killer with foot and car traffic.
Just a suggestion - try doing PV in different directions. Maybe first day do PV going up through Lunada Bay (sp?) to San Pedro, and back around through Rollings Hills. Next day try going East through Rolling Hills first and take Hawthorne Blvd back down to PV Drive. Just so pretty up there. I used to extend my rides by just taking one side street after another especially through Lunada Bay.
Have fun. Should be nice there this weekend.
