Touring - Another Surly LHT Convert!

My boss liked my LHT so much that he got me to build one for him. Mines the blue color so he got the cherry pearl and all black components. Black Brooks, Salsa shaft, Delgato rims/XT hubs and Dt DB black spokes. Black SKS fenders, Nitto 177 48CM bars, Cane Creek levers, Ultigra bar shifters, Jandd Explorer rack, Shimano cantis, Sugino cranks 26-36-46, 11-32 SRAM cassette, LX front and rear der. The frame is 60CM size.
Since I knew what mistakes to avoid this time, the build went smoothly. The attatched pic is my boss standing with the bike not 5 minutes after I finished it. The cherry color is sweet with black components.:D

Dave just had to bring his bike into work (Blue 06 LHT). I was riding a Giant Yukon, acutally I had a Giant Yukon and didn't ride it much due to the uncomfortably geometry. I rode the LHT and fell in love with the bike. I mad sure that Dave built the bike exactly as his was (components and set up). The only change was a slight alteration to do with the seat height.

What a dream ship. I will be taking the bike out this weekend for some long rides. I don't know if any of you know Dave, however he is a great person. He built this bike for me and had to deal with my painstaking questions. I can't believe we made it through the process. I will keep everyone posted on how the bike performs.

I got his 23" yukon in trade for the build (he bought the components-for wholesale no less). I'm gonna make a touring off road bike out of it this fall. I feel I got the better part of the deal. Been looking for a yukon frame to play with. As for exact components, his has Delgato rims and mine are Velocity. I wish he'd tour with me as I want to see how stealthy his bike is.

Monoborracho---go for it. I had some reservations about the LHT and finally bit the bullet and got a frame for build up. I dont regret that decision--well, except that I regret not getting one sooner. Ive got 3--wait now 4 bikes and I still only ride my LHT---road ride, tours, grocery getter, etc. Ahhhhh--true love at last!:D

It great on the road but a little more wiggly than I'd like when its fully loaded, wiggly in that you really need to keep a hand on the bars with 50 # of gear.

panniers are Cannondale all around, zipper sides. Not waterproof, but I really like them.

Dave built your new bike up with some really good component choices. It should perform very well, and it looks really nice too.

I love the way my LHT rides, too. A very comfortable, functional, durable bike!

If your asking me then I can tell you its night and day difference. I feel the steel is more suple especially when loaded. If you were'nt asking me then sorry :eek:

Another one! I just ticked past 100 miles on my Black Cherry Pearl LHT, almost exactly two weeks after finishing the build. I'm hoping to rack up more miles in the future, but I (sadly) don't have very far to ride these days. Those hundred miles have been truly wonderful though. It's an absolutely fantastic bicycle, and a blast to ride. It isn't the fastest ride around, but it's pretty much the ultimate do-everything bike for all seasons. I've been riding it as if it were my only bike - because my Schwinn feels so junky in comparison - and I can tell that it would happily continue to do the job with no other bike to share the load for as long as I needed it to. The only reason that there will be more bikes to share the load is because I'm addicted, not because the Long Haul Trucker is anything less than the right bike for almost any job.

Now somebody else in the company wants one built. At this rate, LHT's will dominate Indiana in the near future. Dang--what should I charge or trade for this time? He just bought a Trek 5200, but its not in my size.

New to Surly and -- one week in -- I'm quite pleased. Think maybe I could be one of these Surly junkies I'm reading about all over the net!

I've always ridden touring geometry... my last frame was a too-tall-for-me, 2nd-hand Nishiki with a extremely long wheelbase. For this build, I decided to go with the Cross Check to get a little bit better handling and I've got it!

The Nishiki was a really nice bike (much heavier), but basically the components were thoroughly ready to be overhauled. As much fun as I had riding that beast, the Surly puts all my previous bikes to shame.

Snyder, congrats, on the bike and having someone who knows what he's doing helping you out. Load it up, take it on a tour! Take pics!!!!

Snyder just called me and let me know (unwisely) that he fell over while clipped in. Its his first clipless bike. I told him to have his neighbors take pictures next time. I explained that untill you fall over at a stop light (with lots of traffic) that you really havent had an experience. Untill I got the process down, I must have fallen over half a dozen times. Welcome to the club Snyder!
