Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Good or Bad Paint Idea

So would it be absolutely ******** for me to take my bike to the art school and let the kids go wild? It would certainly be original and probably cheaper than a powder coat and if we clear coated it afterwards the paint job would hang around, correct?

at best, it might end up looking like a landshark.

at worst, it might end up looking like some 80s pollock-inspired abortion.

That depends. If you want a unique bike, it would be a great idea. If you want a good looking bike, you're running a big risk.

Who knows, though. It could turn out really well.

if you want art, art schools are usually one of the last place i'd look.

Dunno, the kids are likely to paint on small detail images independently of each other, so tiny parts will look nice but the bike as a whole will look like dog vomit.
If you get one or two to paint it the overall look might be ok, though. You work/study/know people at an art school?

depends what school.

if they have a transportation department, have one of the guys practice on it. They have to do solid color speedforms and a solid color would look good.

Do it. You can always repaint over it. I've been on rides with guys who stick ugly ass stickers all over their frames. They don't give a ****.

Agreed. If you have to go this route, talk to some architecture or design students.

Do it, and there is the one and million chance it'll make your bike even more valuable...once the artist is dead of course.

If you're gonna do it, don't give them free reign. Maybe give a list of things you like etc. That way, if their "art" will be of things you have an interest in.

I say do it. Even if it looks bad, you'll always have a really cool story.

painting over an olive green pista is such a shame...

HA!...as someone who goes to art school, and a fairly reputable one at that, I would NOT allow anyone to touch my frame. There are a lot of talented people, but in general a bike frame is not a particularly easy surface to paint hence why some of the most beautiful bikes have incredibly simple schemes. If anything I would let some graphics students have at in in ps/illustrator an if you like it have a sign shop cut some vinyl.

Haha at least I'm not spray-painting it right? Thing is the pista is the new timbuk2 bag...can't stand passing the other two guys that have one on the street, just so awkward. Anyone else think I shouldn't paint over the pista? You have to make your bike your own right?

So I went and wandered the art school...I have some friends who are good but dropping through the recent gallery I'm guessing by the strings hanging from the ceiling with plastic cups attached art that it is NOT a good idea to give them free reign. Maybe if I posed it to some of the digital media people and then tossed their designs over to the automotive department we could do something original. Can you airbrush bikes like they do cars? They do airbrush cars right? The one car I owned was held together by duct tape so I don't really know much.

the artists who could make your bike look cool wouldn't bother because they have better things to do.
the artists who would do your bike, suck.

take it to an elementary school and have the kindergartners paint it. they'd be stoked on it, and whatever you get back is almost guaranteed to be better than what some hipster college kid is gonna put on it.
