I was on my way home from a 50-mile ride and had a run-in with an Idiot driver with cell phone. She pulled out right beside me forcing me off the road and into a service station. If it had not been a service station parking lot I would have been curbed. Without thinking about it and as I had my large full water bottle in-hand and without thinking about it I smashed it into the side of her door producing a very deep and large dent in the door as if it were made of paper. That SUV still had the new vehicle dealers tag on the rear. Looked like at least $1,000 worth of damage too me! It was very satisfying. She looked at me for a second and then took off at high speed running the red light thinking she had hit me. I was off the hook for the damages and she was in for the repair cost and lots of sleepless nights wondering if she got away with a hit and run. Justice!

Wow, I did not know you could leave a dent with a bottle like that. But then again I never have mine more than 1/3 for commutes. On the couple of times I have needed to pitch the bottle, it was more of an unimpressive thud....or fell short.

One time on the tandem I grabbed the bottle to pitch, but it was full of ICE, so I didn't pitch it. Yes that was an Idiot on the cell phone as well. An Ice bottle would prolly go through the back window as well as the front. :)

Glad you survived the idiot driver.

Woo Hoo! While because of my job, I should never praise violence... Sometimes it just has to be done. Personally, I would have gone for the make, model, & license # and called it in. A hands free setup is the law here (although nobody seems to know it - including the police). If you were really sneaky, you could have called it a hit and run:) My last ride, I nearly got hit by a girl gabbing on a cell phone - on her bike! Grrrrr.

Nicely done, n4zou.

I'm glad you're okay. I hope she becomes more attentive with the damage that was done to her lazy-mobile.

Nice... Not only staying upright but doing some much needed damage.

n4zou, How close to the curb were you riding when this driver pulled out? No guarantee, but you can help avoid situations like this by moving out into the lane more to make yourself visible (I'm assuming you weren't far from the curb to begin with). It's possible that the driver never saw you at all.

Nice thinking, though I still can't help but be mad at the lady for DRIVING OFF when she thinks she hit you. Glad she didn't!

Ahh... how nice.
And some folks in A&S wonder why we want to "get these motherfluckin cagers off the motherfluckin roads!"

i had a close call last summer... this idiot turned left and nearly hit me. He had a stop sign but went right through it- he didn't even look. He was blabbing on his cell phone, riding a big nissan SUV. I stopped and had to turn my wheel- he was that close. If i'd kept going i'd have either been hit on my ride side, or at the very least, had a flucked wheel. Neither happened- but i've had other close calls. People blabbing on their stupid phones just go right through stop signs.

Consider moving to California. Our Governator signed a bill restricting cell use while driving. The fine is trivial, the real penalties being points for a moving violation and your insurance company finding out.

Getting the tag number was the problem as I noticed when she took off in that KIA SUV all that was on the rear was a dealers tag. You know the advertisement tag they put where the real tag should be until the owner registers the new vehicle and gets a real tag to put in its place. Like I said, it was a new, just off the lot cheap Korean made SUV. I was about one foot to the left of the white line when she pulled out of a parking lot across the street from me. What was really shocking was the fact she looked me straight in the eye when pulling out and moving right into me. I guess she thought I should not be on the road and was just going to force me off it. I guess that’s what caused me to loose my mind. My water bottle "was" a Sigg Switzerland 1 Liter "Swiss Cross" Aluminum Bottle. I use a small plastic water bottle mounted to my handlebar and fill it with the Aluminum Bottle as required. I was just about to stop for the light and had my bottle in hand getting ready to do a quick refill.

My thoughts exactly. Dizzy biotch got some payback though. Nicely done!

Concrete filled water bottles are the shiz!

Yeah, but ICE filled ones are nicely practical, solid water is no heavier then liquid water, and if your out for a couple of hours, that nice cold water on a hot day can really be handy:D . Heck toss an ice filled one at the door of one of those cheap Korean SUVs and it will probably go right on through:eek:

Hand-free makes no one safer. If one hand on teh wheel was that dangerious, we'd ban stick-shifts. The issue is that phone conversatins take more attention than a regular one, because the person we are talking to is not there. In fact, I wonder if the feeling of safety from a handfree system doesn't make it worse. The only thing it does is make the person you almost hit not curse cell phones, cause they can't see them.
We should either ban them or do nothing.

If you have a decent rechargeable headlight, consider using it in the daytime as a visiblity enhancement. I also like neon-lime clothing for visibility, too. Glad to hear you got away with no harm, anyway :)

I'm glad you are ok, and no question but that she was in the wrong, but I can't say I applaud your reaction. If she were a little more clever, it would be you facing charges. What you did is at least as much of an infraction as what she did. It is never ok to bash in the side of another vehicle.

n4zou.......how do you know that the police aren't looking for you? She may have run the red light thinking you were going to harm her. Has she reported a bicyclist fitting your descripiton for assault and/or damage to her vehicle? Or maybe husband/boyfriend driving the route looking for you?

Jawohl mein handyherr!

I drive while using my cellular phone. I use my handsfree with it, as it lets me be less distracted. The level of distraction while chatting on my phone is hardly anything. I am still alert, safe, and a good driver. Not all are like this, though.

My phone has saved my butt a number of times because I could use it while driving. We just need to take responsibility for our actions, not blame an object we're using. If a driver hits someone due to a cellular phone distracting them, they should be punished. If a driver hits someone and a cellular phone wasn't distracting them, they should be punished. Cell phones don't kill people. People kill people.

Hey, my point is that its dumb to ban them if you don't go all the way. Honestly, I also think banning them is dumb, thats sort of my point.

N4ZOU, what's going to be your defense when you are having a ham radio QSO on your bike and run into a pedestrian?
