He looks like a cool psychadelic army helmet from the 60's.

It's the American Box turtle (colors are wrong, no?)
About a month ago I encountered 11 of them, all
on the same ride... It happens every year at about
the same time. Mating season I guess. Two of them
were about 5 feet apart, but all the other 9 were 1/2
mile or more from each other.

My turtle can take your's: Snapping turtle...lousy pic taken with cell phone on a ride on a rail bed...he was crossing to get to another pond...bit at my tire and did not take his eyes off of me until I rode off. Was about 10-12" long and a little pi$$ed that I had stopped to look/detain for pic. They smell wonderful...like roadkill....most likely appealing to other snappers.

Can beat it. Easily. Time to go catch the big one in the pond.

spinbackle, watch your toes. I've seen snappers bite 1/2 inch oak branches in two. (Now what did I do with that 3/4?:D )

We get Gopher Turtles down here. Saw one at a distance yesterday. I've run into one in the past. Saw it last minute, slammed the brakes and hit it with a gentle "THUD". Just enough to scare it!
