Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - building rear wheel and truing at LBS cheaper?

So im thinking of building a wheel.
I have never built a wheel so this is what i thought:
i'd buy a hub, rim, spokes, spoke wrench, then just follow sheldon brown's wheel building guide. of course since it would be my first wheel, it wouldn't be true (i'd probably be pretty ****ed up), so i'd just take it to the LBS to get it trued saying i crashed it lol - $10 labor?

Or is that more expensive and hassle than just going to LBS with a hub and picking out a rim and telling them to build it for me - $30 labor?

could the first option be potentially dangerous?

Straying off topic, im confused about redishing a wheel where the spokes on one side are tighter than the other. does that only apply with regular wheels converted to FG and not track wheels?
so if i were to build up a reliable fixie, i'd save trouble by simply getting track wheels correct? rahter than a conversion which i'd have to bring to LBS to dish and true.

Geez this is confusing, is there a guide or tutorial on the internet that tells you how to convert to a FG with pictures/diagrams? I really need pictures and sheldon brown's site doesn't explain it enuff for me.

I finished my first wheel build late last week. It takes time, but I made sure it was true and round and then took it to my LBS for a sanity check. The guy at the LBS said that the only slight issue was that he felt there was not enough tension in the spokes, just slightly low.

I say if you are going to go the route of starting it, you may as well finish it. Take your time and if you get to the point that you are about to pull your hair out, just put the wheel aside for a few hours or for the night and go back at it the next day. I don't think you gain enough by partially finishing, but that's just my opinion.

So far as you're confident building a wheel, you won't have any problems. If you take your time and follow instructions, you're not going to do anything bad to your wheel that your LBS can't undo. And you don't need to lie to them, just ask them to true the wheel for you. I can't imagine anyone discouraging you from learning to do something for yourself.

It may cost more than $10 to true, but that will depend on your LBS. I think $40 is pretty standard to build a wheel.

IMHO, you're best off just building a track wheelset. If you can reasonably afford it, it's the best option.

isn't the best option to just buy a track wheelset? I mean its the most economical, but not as educational.
so i was looking at like Suzue/Mavic wheels on ebay, those are cheap huh?
those will last right?

also do those wheelsets online come with lockrings? im wondering like after u get the wheelset, how do you put on the cog and lockring? are there instructions in the box? can i just bring some heinekens and have the lbs to teach me for free? (hoping that they are not biased against FG bikes)

what part of the world are you in there are many coop bike shops that will teach you and let you use their tools for a nominal fee

Don't be a chump to your LBS, if you explain to them that you'd like the experience of lacing up the wheel, and they have them finish her up I'm sure you can work something out.

This is what I normally do. I lace up my wheels, bring them up to true to the best of my abilities, and have my shop get out any hops or wobbles I cant and check the tension w/ a tensionometer. It usually costs me about 15 per wheel.

If not cheaper, it'll probably be the best way to learn. I gotta start building my own wheels, only thing I haven't done yet.
