please excuse my irgnorance, but why does that bike weigh so much? just a super beefy frame/fork?

Rims, wheels, frame and fork.

well...for starters i believe the frame and fork come to around 13lbs alone. then the cranks, pedals, and tires/tubes are pretty heavy. although the vigilante 2.5 tires are the lightest i have seen. they are a single ply. the dh fsa stem and bars are kind of heavy.

i actually have some very light weight stuff on the bike. the seat, seatpost, and gamut guide are very light. the i9 hubs and spokes should be light. the dt-swiss fr rims are probably average. 4-cogs should be lighter than 8 or 9 cogs.

i guess i was hoping for a little lighter as well. i don't know if 35lbs is decent or not for this type of bike. it is my first:D

the main reason i investigated less cogs is because of the very wide spindle bb i had to use to clear the cranks against the chainstays. it is an fsa 68x123mm isis bb. i was afraid the chain angle would be extreme. however, i wanted the 1x8/9 setup i have grown to like. ...so i wanted to run a smaller group of cogs more "outboard". the chain ring is 34t blackspire and the cogs are 13-17-23-30. i cut the 1 1/4 pvc, which fits perfectly, in a cheap mitre box and fine tuned the widths and tolerances by lapping the pvc rings on a flat plate with sandpaper. they are around 14mm and 6mm i believe. i got them nearly perfect. the thick pvc seems way better than the slim spacers i had purchased specifically for cassettes.

in retrospect, if the i9 hub shell is the same as their ss version (with regards to durability), i think i made a huge mistake. it would have been way trick to get their ss version because it holds 4-cogs. so i would have had and and even stronger wheel because it probably would have been non-dished. something for you to consider if you are thinking of i9 wheels and 4 speeds.

thanks! the fork feels great! it is still breaking in. i know people don't like manitou/answer so i will be truthful and let the forum know if something bad happens to it. otherwise i see no problems.

I've been meaning to do a report on my Nixon fork. I've got about 7 hard riding months on it and its held up well,no problems. It could break tomorrow, but so far so good.

Wow that looks awesome. I'm not typically a big fan of white bikes but that is nicely built.

Wow I love it! The set up in the back is crazy with the i9 hubs and the 4 cogs.

Although it'd surely be a trick setup, I would personally probably go the same route as you and stick with an 8/9 speed hub to keep future options open.

Looks good though, and don't sweat the weight - with a burly frame, 6" fork, and DH wheels (even though they're relatively light) there's not a whole lot you can do on the weight weenie side of things.

Very nice looking bike! I was actually planning on selling my current bike and a Transition Vagrant was one bike that I was thinking of replacing it with. That thing definitely looks sweet, and glad you're having fun with it.

Hey can you tell me were to find that saddle?
sure. i know some people think it is tacky and all to make the saddle match with bike and stuff, but i think this one made all the difference. it really tied in the build i think...a key element.

i got it at www.universalcycles.com here is web site: http://www.wtb.com/saddles_purev.html

now i will say in advance, it was not my intention to seek out an expensive Ti railed seat. however, i really liked how it complemented the bike.

yeah...thanks for making me feel better. not sure if you know, but i sort of have a 29er project i am sitting on and i might do i9 ss wheels for that running 4 speeds or hadley ss running 5 speeds. for the larger wheels it is nice to have the non-dishing if you can from what i read on other forums. the rohloff is especially good for the flange diameter and between-flange measurement as well.
