General Cycling Discussion - Frame pumps...again

Okay, so I bought the Topeak road morph pump. Incidentally, very nice pump, I like it quite a bit. However, there is one small problem. Or large problem, depending on how you look at it.

As a fairly small individual, I have a fairly small bike frame. There is absolutely no place on my frame that the road morph fits. The downtube is the only place it could conceivably fit, and that isn't an option for a few reasons. 1) It's one of those "teardrop" shaped downtubes, and the mounting hardware is more for circular tubes. 2) The mounting hardware doesn't work in conjunction with my water bottle cage. 3) The dog ate my mounting hardware anyway.

Besides, I don't know how much I would have trusted that mounting clip.

I do carry the pump in my panniers...but there are some times that I want to go out for a recreational (non-commute) ride without my panniers; which leaves me without my pump. I do carry an emergency CO2 shot as my primary quick fix, but what are the odds that I'd either mess that up on my first attempt, or maybe not empty the bottle perfectly thus requiring a "top off"?

The question here is: Does anyone use the Crank Bros Power Pump Alloy? That one looks like it will fit (I measured this time), it has a guage, a 130 psi capacity, and a mounting bracket that works with my water bottle cage. But how easy is it to use?

I carry just CO2 on my road bike for essentially the same reason. An HPX pump doesn't fit to my satisfaction on my Klein. I've never been stranded by CO2 but, even if I was, I'm pretty confident of my ability to find a way back.

The Road Morph doesn't fit on the top tube? On my Lemond Buenos Aires (51 cm?), that's where I have it, secured with a velcro strap. A friend carries his RM in his jersey pocket.

Compact geometry frame, with a sloping top tube. It could just squeeze under there, but then I wouldn't have room for a water bottle underneath it.

This would all be a non-issue if Topeak made one of those brackets that attaches to the water bottle cage mounts and hangs the pump just underneath and to the side.

It's very frustrating. Still hoping someone can tell me about the Power Pump Alloy.

Are we talking the OEM bracket that comes with the new G pump, and attaches with zipties in order to be alongside the cage? Or do they have a newer one that attaches at the bosses underneath the cage? If so, I want one too! The ziptie option sucks...

Performance sells one for mountain bike pumps here (http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=5750&subcategory_ID=4363). If you have the Road Morph you need to use two pieces of sticky back velcro to make it small enough to hold the pump. Also get a velcro strap, which you should use anyway.

Blackburn makes a clip also but I can't find the number right now. Wheatridge Cyclery in Colorado sells them so I'd suspect that your bike shop could get them too.

C02 only is just asking for it, imho.

Run down to the fabrication shop on a Saturday morning with a six-pack of decent beer. Take your bike and the pump, and see what they come up with!

Call Topeak. They'll send you another mount. Most likely, for free.

I have a 51 cm bike. It's compact, and has a teardrop downtube. So I'm pretty much in your same situation, having to mount it on the downtube because it won't fit anywhere else and I need two water bottles. The clamp fits. You just have to try and bend it a little bit for the sharp portion of the teardrop and clamp it a bit harder. I mounted the pump so that part of it sticks out under the frame of the bike, past the bottom bracket. Otherwise it will get in the way of my bottle cage. Don't worry about it hitting something. The chainrings will protect it.

Note that you can also loosen up the attachment nub on the pump itself so that you can slide it up or down the pump body, depending on where and how you want the pump to be positioned. However, you don't want to slide it all the way to the end because there will be some crazy amount of torque on the hardware and it may crack.

The mount is pretty durable. I go over curbs a lot on my road bike and it's been holding up great.

Flipped, the pump bracket fits under the bottle cage bracket, so I needed to find longer mounting bolts than the ones that came with my bike. Also, the distance between the two bracket holes was a bit too wide so I had to file the inner edge of one of the holes to make it fit.
