Great day in the morning! Anyone else get in a good ride? I did a 30 mile ride this morning between Layton and Bountiful before breakfast. Saw tons of runners and cyclists out there. Anyone on here in that area?

Bountiful-ite here! I ride most every day into downtown SLC and then home. I also ride Tuesday nights with the Bountiful Mazda group.

I realize this is nine days late and I'm 70 miles away but yes, I did get in a good ride that day. 10 miles to work, 4-6 miles to and from lunch, and 10-12 miles home. I tend to meander a bit on my way back up the hill. I also got the same ride in on the 6th, 8th, 11th, and again this morning.

Hi!

I live in West Point and commute to SLC. I'm interested in riding a bike to work daily... what is the best way to work up to this ride? Is this over-ambitious?

Thanks!

While I don't think it's over-ambitious, I wonder if this time of year is a good time to start. Do you often ride in cold weather? I live in in W. Kaysville and work in downtown SLC. I've only ridden to and from work a handful of times and it's almost exactly 25 miles from my doorstep to my office. It took me between an hour and a half to two hours each way on average during the summer and early fall in good weather.
Do you have the time to commit to commuting from West Point? I know I don't, having a family to take care of.
If you do start biking to work, I'll try and catch you when you go through Kaysville and ride with you a few times. :)

I'm not far from you, I ride from Sandy to downtown a couple of times a week. If you want to do it with someone else, let me know. What is your commute like?

I'm in Taylorsville, just 2.5 miles west of the ParkWay, I drive a service truck every day, park the filthy thing in the drive way, I have to invent places to go.
I like to go places on asphalt, but I love to go in the dirt.
But I am fat and 50 so I get wimpy after 20 or so miles of dirt and say 40 or 50 on road stuff.
I would like to meet some grandpa types interested in car pooling to some dirt holes.
I can ride with the nephew, but he is too busy, nobody else I know is dirty minded.

I live in Fruit Heights, me and another buddy love to cross 89, and ride along the Shoreline Trail there. It's not very scenic, but it's great practice for competitions and endurance!

This weather is killing my season ski pass. But it's great for the bikes and the R1100S.

South Ogden here and work at Hill. Count my wife in too. She commutes north of home 10 miles to where she teaches.

Cheers,

That does not look to good yet, This new highway going in from 215 north may end up with bike provision, but I doubt it.

I did get to ride a little, 10 miles exactly, up steep hill mostly(Kearns), maintained 20 plus the whole way, (Excl. lights)with no big front sprocket, on a MTB.

Old bike, tires low too.

Pizza sure has lots of carbs, too bad its dark.

Ya gotta take em when you can get em.
I had to work all day.

Twenty plus miles up and down the Jordan Parkway on my 1962 Schwinn 2-speed Traveler yesterday. Great, except for a few idiots out, like the walkers who needed the whole width of the trail, and the clown on the Polaris 4 wheeler, who had his dogs running loose near Chesterfield. Right by the sign saying "No Motor Vehicles" and "Dogs Must Be On Leash". Oh well, didn't have to dodge the Saturday morning crew that shows up later in the year, and races three abreast around the blind curves and through the underpasses.
Rant off.

Last two weeks of March I will be working in St. George, I LOVE to ride the Bear Claw, I took a wrong turn last year and did not go where I was headed. I wanted to go to Stucki Springs, I was out of water and had to head back. As soon as I got home I bought a bigger Camel Back. I am also adding another bottle cage.

I got to tell you Utah MTBers out there, if you haven't ridden the Bear Claw, you should, it will turn you into a kid again. It is just flat fun.

I do this every March.

Went in to work late today just so I could get in a decent ride. Passed a couple roadies out in the Kaysville area around noonish today. Rest of the week looks pretty good for riding, mostly.
Btw, where are all you Utahns? We can't sit here and let Nycycle talk to himself the whole time. :)

Hey Dude, I is right here, workin my butt off all week, wishing things would slow down so I could ride.

I come to this forum and look here, if nobodys here I leave, I like chatting with yall here in my own state.

I live north Taylorsville.
I cannot commute as I have to park a service truck in the driveway.
It's hard to ride after a 15 hour shift.
But on Sunday afternoon I will ride ANY WHERE I can be it Road or Dirt.

There's an Ogden area group ride, and a Salt Lake City group ride. Anybody's invited.

Hey Sombeech, have you ever riden the Anteope Island deal, is it any good, ?

I've been out there, and didn't like it at all. The only reason I went was because it was January, and it was the only trail without snow in Northern Utah.

It's got a lot of sand traps. Here are some pictures of our ride about a year ago.

Thanks for the heads up, on the Island,, My nephew and his new wife and I were planning on trying it out this spring, I got a year park pass, but I don't like sand, in my parts.

I like 5 mile pass out in Cedar Fort too, On the north side of the road I was chasing rabbits, those little buggers are fun.

We'll actually try the Bonneville Shoreline trail in Ogden next week. It may have a little mud on it still, but it's well below the snowline.

Yeah, it was a great day to ride. Too bad I got a flat 3 miles into my ride this morning and forgot I had already used my spare tube and was out of patches. Of course, maybe it was a good thing I got the flat only 3 miles from home. Walking that far in my duck shoes sucks though. Hope tomorrow's nice.

I got to ride 16 after work, took my time and loved it, checked out the new bridge on the 3900 South Parkway deal and just had a good time till I was out of time, them home.

GOOD TO SEE Utah riders here.

JF1, I flatted a rotten old tube last fall, had a new one on board, but left my pump behind. Something about a 7 mile walk that helps me remember that darn pump, now.
Nycycle, we must cross paths on the Parkway from time to time. If I'm on one of the old Schwinns, I'll probably be wearing a corduroy golf cap. If on the blue Trek 1000, look for the rack trunk on the back. Old gray haired dude with bugs in his teeth. :) Probably wearing a t-shirt that says "Yeah, I know, on my left", or "I may be old, but I'm slow".

waldowales, I would love to take you up on that Parkway deal, once a year I get on just North of 45th and go north as far as I can then south, then the rest of the summer I use it as safe way to get to my daughters.
I should be easy to spot, redneck in Pearl Izumis, MTB helmet and a Jesus fish on my White Hard Rock, I also have a garbage rack on the back, 2 water bottles and packs on the handle bar and an in frame pack.
I am looking for some Huffy stickers for it, as is I just drag it in the toilet with me.
Which on ramp do you use to get o the thing?

Nycycle, I usually get on the trail at Cottonwood something-or-the-other, just south of Bullion Street in Murray. Sometimes drive over in my Safari van, sometimes ride over from my home just off Vine Street. From there, I usually either go south to where it comes out on 7th west at about 87th south, or north to the new bridge where it is detoured about 5th south. Used to ride to the I-80 dead end, or occasionally take the streets to North Temple and get back on and go to 10th north. Haven't ever taken the dirt further north. (Yet.) Occasionally I ride the 126th to 146th south part, and once my bro and I rode the length of the Utah Valley section. I'l watch for you.

We got to hook up and talk over old times,,,
But mostly I need you to educate me on this south stuff, I tried to find it and got lost.

I have not been north since, well I went to North Temple, so it's been a while, they got trails out north too and out west, wished they all hooked up. I see em from I215 while in my truck(Work).
That Schwinn,, that a skinny tire deal?

Cottonwood Grove just south of 215?

I found a bike pump on the shoreline south, inbetween strongs canyon and 46th trailhead. If you can identify it, you can come pick it up from me.

Howdy. New to the board and relatively new to biking. I started last summer. I took my second short ride last night on the new bike. I'm way out of shape. I'll be training hard to hit my goal of a road trip from North Salt Lake to Utah Lake. I"m also looking at road tripping out to Antelope Island. If anybody knows of some good places to camp that are relatively easy riding, I"m all ears.

The longest ride I"ve had thus far was last summer on the Jordan River Parkway. We started in Murray somewhere and rode down to about 12000 S. Got back to the van and my wife had left her steering wheel lock key at the house. So we rode all the way back to North Salt Lake. The Jordan River Trail runs all the way up to Rose Park and then we hit Redwood Road. It was easy riding. The hardest part by far was Redwood Road straight up North Salt Lake Center Street to my house on Orchard Drive. Going from one end of the valley to the other unplanned wasn't exactly the joy it should have been, but it was the catalyst for setting the road trip goals.

I"m also going to be commuting from North Salt Lake to West Valley a few times a week. Approx Bangeter and 21st south. I think I've found a relatively safe route, but there's no way to avoid some serious congestion at off ramps/on ramps and intersections.

Does the Jordan River Parkway run down to Utah County? Furthest I've been is about 120th South. I'm looking to ride all the way to Utah Lake this summer. If I can't get there from the Jordan River Parkway, I'm thinking of taking Redwood all the way to the west side of the lake.

The north end of the trail past 10th North isn't worth riding. Eventually it's supposed to get into North Salt Lake, but I'm not sure when that is going to be. If you jump off on 10th North and head west, there's a bike route that goes on the west side of 215 that is nice and then cuts back up to redwood road at North Salt Lake.

waldowales

Southbound Jordan Parkway Trail stops at about 87th south on 7th west, starts again at 10000 south, runs to about 11000 south, starts again about 11800, but no trail head until 12600, runs to 14600. No more until Utah County, just south of the narrows, runs nearly to Utah lake.
Redwood is the best bet going to the lake.

Nycycle
03-23-07, 06:56 PM
Come to think of it, I cannot think of any place that the trail could go past the point with out going west of Redwood, that place is all filled up with high security gummer stuff, prison, military etc....... I dunno for sure though.

Post up when you are ready to do this and I'll do the NSL to Utah Lake with you. If you do go from NSL to Antelope Island, you will probably go through my neighborhood so if you need to stop and re-fuel or something, let me know. I live in W. Kaysville and often do a 50 mile route from my house, up to NSL, down center street to Redwood and work my way back.
Later,
Joe

That would be great to have company. I haven't set a date yet because I'm still getting in bike shape. I live a block north of Center Street up on Orchard Drive. Your 50 mile route to Kaysville is similar to one of the rides I'm training up for. I'd be taking Main Street NSL which turns into 1100 West up to West Bountiful Pages Lane, then to the frontage road up to Farmington and up to Farmington Pond. I'm also thinking of doing Skyline Drive from Bountiful to Farmington.

Excuse me for butting in, is there a bikable route other than Redwood Road that will get one to this lake of bugs you speak of(Utah Lake)?????????

waldowales
04-02-07, 09:34 PM
There is supposedly a frontage road along I-15, but I've not seen it. That would be the long way around, if it even exists. You can take Redwood to 8750 North in Lehi and get back onto the Jordan Parkway and take it nearly to the lake before you have to wind around the streets again. Why on earth would you want to go to that lake with a bike?
