Northeast - Where are the MD people's

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Think we should start another thread about this ride and try to get some BF people together? Also, I plan on doing the Covered Bridges ride again...that was a blast last year. This year I ride with the group and the FIL is on his own.
We could. I don't mind keeping it low key as well. I have another person or 2 not on BF probably going. I do want to get an early start.
I am on the fence with Covered Bridges. It was awesome riding with such a big BF group. But honestly I thought the ride kinda sucked overall. Maybe because it was so hot and the fact that the best rest stop wasn't even part of the ride.
Getting lost and having to make up a 15 min deficit at the beginning to catch you guys too kinda wasn't fun.

Ok here is another Baltimore route puzzler. I have a friend who started riding this past year. He just bought himself a new bike and wants to start riding to work. He lives just south of BWI, about a mile due south of the BWI trail loop on WB&A. He works at Constellation Energy. Which is basically the corner of Pratt and President St.
He really wants to try doing it, but has concerns about riding through some "bad" neighborhoods. He mentioned Cherry Hill. I don't know anything about the neighborhoods so I haven't been able to figure out a route that he would feel comfortable riding.

He should be able to connect up with this route: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Balto-Annapolis (if he has any difficulties let me know.) Depending on the sensitivity to bad neighborhoods there are 0, 0.8 or 1.5 miles worth of not really that bad of bad neighborhoods on the route.
I have been wanting to post all weekend since Saturday. but one thing or the other has kept me from it. I did the Fenwick / Bethany Ocean to Bay ride on Saturday and had a great time. It was a nice flat ride with nice scenary along the way. I only missed two turns on the que sheet but did good otherwise. I wound up doing a little over 50 miles in 3.5 hours witb two breaks in there.
I'll post a ride link later
http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/invitation/email/accept.mb?senderPk.pkValue=109527&unitSystemPkValue=2&episodePk.pkValue=2555845http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/invitation/email/accept.mb?senderPk.pkValue=109527&unitSystemPkValue=2&episodePk.pkValue=2555845
Hey Don; I did this ride too! 51.6ish miles in 3:18 with 3 very short breaks. I missed a turn which added on the extra mileage (they need to do a little bit better job on the cue sheet for next year IMO). The one turn that I think quite a few people missed was not marked clearly at all.

I would recommend that he test potential routes on an early Saturday morning to get a feel for them. Human car is right, there really is not too much to worry about. The worst thing in my opinion is the horrid condition of the road surface on all neighborhoods adjacent to patapsco ave.
My preference is to take the Gywns falls trail past the Greyhound station, then get on Annapolis rd at the power station along Russell. Take that to Waterview, go right, then immediate left to remain on Annapolis. Take it across patapsco ave and all the way to Nursery, right on Nursery then left on Hammonds Ferry which will take you to Andover and the BWI trail.

Angelo, I keep meaning to try your route but I always seem to forget it when I am out there. So what I ended up trying coming home was Camp Meade Rd (170) Baltimore Annapolis Blvd (648.) Which scores points on being direct but I am still undecided which route may offer the better comfort factor, that certainly wasn’t bad but most of the traffic was going the opposite way so the experience may be different if you’re riding with the majority of traffic.

Its been a while since I have posted anything on this site, but I have made the leap and am in the process of building a singlespeed road bike. I just needed something other than my full suspension mountain bike to cruise around town on, and not feel so paranoid when I have it locked up outside. Whats next....spandex? :)

Hope y'all can ride on "bike to work day" tomorrow. I hope to ride all the way (27 miles each way) and forgo the train. we'll see how I feel at 6:00am. Rode almost 35 today(commute & rec). I'm not going to any of the meeting spots as none meet between the 2 cities. Anybody else riding to the meeting spots? Riding to work? Be safe Charlie

Since I started racing, I've had to work back up to including commuting with race training. This past week was the first week of both, except that Wednesday's Greenbelt race got rained out.
Anyway, I went to the Towson Courthouse for Bike2Work. It was a little chilly from the winds out of the northeast once one cooled down from the trip. They had free bananas, bagles, and coffee, as well as the t-shirts, bags, and ankle/wrist reflectors for those who registered.

Ah Man! I was hoping the lack of ride report would go unnoticed.
The short answer, I wussed out.
The longer answer. I have been burning the candle at both ends lately. Between a very heavy workload (I lost a consultant 6 weeks ago, anyone wanna job?) and a daughter giving me fits about sleeping at night I got to my parents extremely exhausted. I packed everything planning on riding. But by 2pm I was just spent. Mentally I really wanted to ride, but physically I was a mess. I was shaky like too much caffeine but due to fatigue. I decided that instead of riding home I would drive.
So I stopped at the Thai take out, and had dinner and a real conversation with my wife. Then watched a little TV with her and went to bed by 8:30pm. I am still kicking myself for not riding, but I know it was the right choice.
I will have plenty more opportunities to do the ride since I am taking the kids down every friday through the summer.

What do you do w/ your daughter once you get to work? I can never go downtown on BTWD since I have to head towards DC. If I ever buy a folder I will go downtown, then hop on the train. I want to meet that lady Eva. Give me advanced warning on the next bike meeting, I've got lots to ask her.

I try not to go fast since I commute everyday. When I ride hard I pay for it on the next day. Yesterday I rode hard and today I woke up with a stiff knee and dead legs. Because of this I did not ride all the way to work but did my bike-train-bike commute. I didn't get a t-shirt either :( About that rain on weds. It lasted 20 minutes but rained really hard. It started when I rode to the train and stopped when I arrived at the station, squish, squish, squish. I left a wet seat on the train. Looked like I peed myself.

It looks like N. Washington St is one-way and you are mapped in the wrong direction (i.e., against the flow of traffic). You can use Broadway to Baltimore instead.
I can't comment on the westside portion of the route, as I don't travel there usually. I'll defer to Charlie and Barry and Angelo.
Btw, I'm on the waiting list for the Men's CAT 5 race... so, see you there.

There are a few northern sections I would change for weekday rush hour travel or for a less experienced rider but you should be fine but at Park Heights and Falstaff pick up my route http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Home-City-Hall and take Baltimore St or Pratt St into Paterson Park (If you are comfortable on Baltimore stay there otherwise drop down to Pratt as there is very little traffic as you near the park.) Note: Use hybrid mode and look closely at the route between Falls and University as it is a bit convoluted but since you are climbing out of the stream valley the residential streets are nice (and a bit less of a slope) and there is a cut through the Rolland Water Tower Park (looks more like a castle turret) a left and a right turn that is almost a u turn onto University.

Cool. That seems fitting (BBC Racing colors) considering you roll on a TCR. Now all you need to do is upgrade to a T-Mobile version and you will match :D
I am probably going to wear my BF.net jersey. Either that or the Seagull Century one.
But I will probably be more noticable by the Canon DSLR with the big honking white lens on the front.

And actually I am probably not coming back per se. My parents have offered again to watch the kids next friday. So this time I am going to bike home friday night and then head out from the park back down to pick them up on saturday.

Ha! you're riding _literally_ to my house (I live on Baltimore street in front of Patterson park, 2nd door after milton!).
For a scenic route I would recommend getting to other side of Druid Hill park, then to falls rd via clipper mill rd, south on falls all the way, across the maryland ave bridge, cross mt royal, left on biddle, right on st paul, take left fork in road after center street, left on lexington go past city hall and veterans building, right @ T, then left on Fayette at police station, right on president, left on Baltimore.

I felt and did much better than the past 2 weeks at Greenbelt, but initially, I felt apathetic about the race. That changed after a thorough warm-up.

Saturday I road 26 miles out to Glenelg for a 26 mile 10/12 BBC ride, in hopes that the slower pace would be easer on my knee that has been giving me trouble off and on. Well I ended up with 3-4 14mph cyclists but they took the hills gently so that really saved my knee and I had a great time.
Then after the ride I decided to head off to Bike Jam. I took Fredrick Road in to the city and about 8 miles out I noticed a car with the bike in the back so I waved as he passed, waved again as I passed and so on all the way to the park. We got there about the same time and talked a bit (I think I might have another convert to commuter biking.) I got to the park around 1ish, had fun listening to the bands, running into various people I know (including noracer who looks good in his racing jersey.) I played Frisbee with a guy named Nick for about an hour. And I think I spent $20 just on drinks (mostly soda and Gatorade) while I was there (it was hot!)
Sunday I had a mission to get a friend back on a bike so we road 10 miles down to a street festival on the west side of town. Not a bad for a first time in a long time ride.
A good east/west route for north BaltoCo? Seminary, Providence, Lock Raven, Dulaney Valley, Manor, Carroll Manor, Sweat Air. The BBC still does rides on these roads so they are used to seeing us out there. Paper Mill has sort of become a no man’s land for cyclists. There is supposed to be a cut through the golf course the locals use instead of Paper Mill but I have not looked into it.

Well, here's some food for thought. I attribute the problem to the valve extender that I need to use with my American Classic wheels, not the tires. I could've continued on if I wouldn't have broken the extender. Also, I ride these same tires day in and day out during my bike commutes to work. I've had less flat problems with them, on the dirty, filthy streets of Baltimore county, then with the Michelin Pro 2s I started with.

That's true. The main interest in those tires for me is their at least theoretical ability to stay on the rim in a flat.
I am not going to buy tubular rims etc for day to day, but out here in CC, it is hilly. Every ride I have several downhills where I am easily getting speeds in the 35-50mph range. Every time I have in the back of my mind what would happen if I had a blowout and my clincher came flying off the rim. Given that the tubular clinchers are supposedly able to stay on even flat it would be a nice extra safety measure.

Small leaks (< 2mm) can be mitigated with sealant (to a point--you won't be able to run them at high pressures.)
The Tufo C S3 Lite tires I've been running are ok about flats. I think I had better results with the Tufo C S33 tires, but the shape of those tires aren't the best for racing, thus the S3s.
Commuting, I run the tires at 90-100 psi. Racing, I run the front at 150 psi and the rear at 160 psi. If I flat during a race, then the race is over, but that would be the same even if I were running clinchers.

My understanding (and I am only going off what I have read, since I have never used tubulars of any kind) is that they generally are repairable. But it entails getting the outer cover off to expose the inner tube that can then be patched. This process is generally thought of as annoying so people tend to junk them after a bad puncture.

Tufos aren't repairable, at least not the clincher versions. I thought that I read that the "normal" tubs were built in such a way that they aren't repairable either. You'd need to get "real" sew-ups.
Here's how to fix a true sew-up tubular:

Yeah back when I was racing like 13 years ago I used sew-ups and made many a PITA repair. I've had good luck with my Serfas and flats, but the thought of the tire coming off the wheel at 30+MPH is scary.
