Wow, so many near-misses on the trail! :) I have been sick for the past 10 days with an incredibly painful chest cough. It's slooooooowly been getting better, but yesterday I just couldn't stand the inactivity anymore, and I went out and rode around the BWI Trail twice. I was there around noon, I guess. I started coughing again at the end, but it sure felt nice to get outside on the bike again!
Ugh. I've got it too. I've been producing phlegm like a factory the last week. and it's taking me too long to get rid of. I did a quick ride of the tour dem parks route yesterday. The ride felt like it was clearing the sick out of me, but as soon as I got home and warm, I started coughing again. :(
Get well!

Hey, Charlie!
I was actually surprised by the fog this morning. None of the weather stations showed fog--just cloudy. I guess that they meant that the clouds were at ground level.
The closer that I got to Towson (from Essex) the foggier it got, but I had zero problems with motor vehicles on the way to work.

well since no one wanted to go mountain biking (i feel its unsafe to go alone, in case something happens), I did 20+ miles on the NRC trail, different than I expected, The crushed rock and puddles caught my by suprise, i was hoping it was paved. I used my commuter for this run, so I guess the new MTB will have to wait for another day.

I don't ride fast all of the time, silly.
Maybe, we can take a trip out to Havre de Grace sometime. It's nice down by the park.
Josh, I understand that one. My riding time has gone down the tubes with 2 kids. I haven't used my Mtn bike as one for years. I just recently put knobbies back on in the hopes of some winter trail riding but haven't made it out yet.
And no worries, NoRacer is a great ride partner at any speed (and I am slower than you). He was nice enough to help me celebrate my B'day last year on a ride. Speaking of which, I hit 36 in 21 days...

 huh, what? And a bike ride too, cool, I'm in.
The Bike Symposium went real well, and if I do say so myself, the presentation that I did went real well and was well received. The main issue for me was it was the presentation before lunch and a lot of people wanted to talk to me afterwards. So while I'm answering questions all the vulturous legislative aids crashed our party and swooped up all the food before I and other people could get any. That's really not right scoring a free lunch off of a non-profit especially if the particular legislator the aid works for is non-supportive of our bike bills.
This was the presentation: http://www.tourdemparks.org/BaltimoreSpokes/MDBikePedCrash2006.doc (zoom to 200%)
We had close to ten bike riders come (I was scared of thunder showers on the way home while having my computer in tow so I got a ride.) One came from just north of Baltimore City and did an out and back ride. That was cool.
Change is definitely in the air with this administration.

Your presentation was very interesting. I'm sure it raised a few eyebrows. I hope it helped some see how are roads and drivers are here in Maryland.
I moved here from South Carolina in 2004 and was totally appalled by the total disregard for traffic laws and speeding. Also the almost total lack of enforcement in most areas. I have even become conditioned to it and find myself at times rolling with the crazies on Rt 50 and 495. I also live right off of Rt. 170 (Telegraph Rd. in Anne Arundel County) and know of at least four or five deaths on a small stretch of that road in the past two years involving both pedestrian and auto collision. The speed limit is 50mph there, which makes it more like 60 in a residential part of Telegraph Rd. When cycling, I have to ride Rt. 170 coming and going from my home, and I'm never really at ease on that road even with wide burms on each side in most places. I know this is only one road out of many, but how many more pedestrians, cyclists and drivers got to die before it becomes an issue worth dealing with.

Barry,
Great presentation at the symposium, pretty shocking numbers. I for one am in the process of lobbying for traffic calming measures on Pinehurst Rd. where I live-a speedway at times. I was encouraged by the work being done in Baltimore city, very energetic and charming young lady in charge.
I'm glad I chose to ride down from Baltimore, just a few drops on my return to Cromwell where I caught the snail rail to Falls Rd. Beautiful little ride up through Rob E Lee park to my home, except for the traffic of course. I was moving pretty good on the B&A, though carrying heavy pannier with my clothes, shoes etc. I find the Arkel panniers though so well built to be rather heavy even when empty.
Also, to give credit, there was another cyclist named Carl who I ran into at the northern terminus of the b&a. He cam all the way from Lutherville via lightrail and we rode to Annapolis together. On the way down in the morning I rode to Camden Yards and picked up the light rail to Cromwell, very convenient.
Thanks Again. I'll be at the Bike Summit in DC next month, hopefully cycling down or jumping on Amtrak with the bike- so if any of you guys have issues you want raised please let me know. There a whole day where we will be lobbying and then there is a congressional bike ride on the last day.
Harry
Hey Barry,
As I was riding down to my studio at the Clipper Mill in Woodberry they were striping the bike lanes as I was rolling through them. Also, last night rode in a new lane from the tower on Roland north to the intersection of Coldspring. Also saw signs up indicating bike lanes, directions by bike to light rail. good stuff.

I might. I planned on cutting volume this week since next weekend is Trade Zone. I was thinking more about riding out your way from BWI on Saturday and again on Sunday just for some low stress miles on the trail.
Hey,
It's last minute, but I am planning on hitting this (http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Long-CC-Loop) route tomorrow morning. My parents offered to take the kids for the night tonight (going to a movie with my lovely wife) and then hitting the road early tomorrow.
I do plan on leaving pretty early tho, so I highly doubt I would get any takers. But I figured I'd throw it up anyhow.

Harry,
I am so upset that I did not ride down to Annapolis. I was wondering if you would be up to writing something I could put up on Baltimore Spokes about why you ride and/or what you got out of the Symposium.
The city is doing some great stuff, that's why that got a lot of awards. It is going to be interesting when we start tackling the police department to be more aware of our issues.
I had an interesting conversation with Stephanie (http://http://www.baltimorespokes.org/article.php?story=20080203172253184) and she said that she was getting some flack from cyclists in the fact that she does not ride anymore. But she does not ride in Maryland because of conditions and she wants to change that. We are in for some interesting times I think.

I was to go backcountry skiing this wknd but lack of natural snow kept me home. I went MOM's(store @ Rt 175) and the next thing I knew I road 62 miles. I rode down to Rt32 back up to 175, across to BWI trail, down the B&A trail, and back to C-ville. Nice day especially since it was unexpected.

I rode the B&A yesterday and today--cutting volume in prep for the Trade Zone training races starting this coming Sunday (17th). I started from my usual place--Dixon Observation Parking Lot at ~11:30am for both rides. The trail is a great place to hide from the wind; much appreciated today.

I looked for your pink jersey but didn't see it. I was on the trail from 2:30-430ish. I was in an orange Sporthill wind block type shirt. There were lots of neon green bikers, a pair of maroon clad female riders but no pink. Did you wash your jersey that day;)

I would have been done by 2:30pm.
No ride for me today :( My daughter has been running about 102 with some upset stomach all day, so I spent my time with her watching all manner of stuff (spongebob, Dora, etc).
I am gonna either hit the rollers or the nordictrack tonight instead.
I did get a great ride in yesterday. Not only was it cool that I left while it was snowing (flurries) but my recent glove purchase answered my final question (ok the rest of me is fine, now how can I keep my hands warm?)
Now if I could just get some no fog glasses I'll be set!

Hey -D,

So, what do you think about that birthday ride into Annapolis we were discussing earlier?
Definitely. The good thing about kids is that they bounce back fast.
As far as the "birthday" ride, I am kinda screwed this year. Every year my wife goes to this womens church retreat which is on the weekend around my birthday. Last year I went down to my parents friday night so that they could watch the kiddies and I could get in a ride.
This year it turns out my parents will be out of town skiing, so this year for my birthday I will be spending the time watching the kids. I will have to check but the following weekend might work instead.
Hey, on another topic. I am gathering from your purchase of the wireless mount and your activity over on the other forum that you are still fairly happy with your ibike? I have been watching a couple on ebay but I am still a little on the fence. It seems to be a pretty good bang for the buck device and probably accurate enough for me. But the Power meter naysayers do a good job of making you second guess the ibike's usefullness.

Actually, the wireless mount is really, really, really great. I would not go back to wired---ever!
The naysayers can say what they want. Unless they've used one for a period of time, they aren't qualified to comment.
I like the PowerTap comparisons that Velocomp posted. I'm sure we'll see more of that with comparisons between iBike, SRM, ERGOMO, and PowerTap.
I guess the real proof, for me, will be my race results. Stay tuned for that.

I wanted so much to ride saturday but as my luck has it, I spent my day moving hay and horse stuff as the wife relocated her horse to ellicot city, it sucked so much passing by all the trails and seeing everyone else enjoying the rollings hills (road bikes) and the trails. I was dying to go, I might try to go next saturday AM if anyone is up to it, as far as I know she hasn't made plans for me yet. I'll go if its cold, let me knowif anyone is game.

Yes there is some beautiful countryside out here. WV really did'nt make much of a shoulder on most of their roads so some can be pretty hazardous. That's why I ride alot in Md. it seems they are more cyclist friendly.
