Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Harry, best of luck on getting the cycling sorted.
BTW, don't sell yourself short. Today, at this moment, I am not physically able to run a halfM, so what I've done in the past is mute. You -are- faster.
I did 50 today, what a beautiful day for riding. Of course I had to take it easy after yesterday, Corbett Rd. is very beautiful heading up to Old York and good clmbing coming away from the NCR.
NR-Thanks, I'm quite happy with just finishing the half and finishing in my expected time. Next year I'll be nipping at the heels of the Kenyans, not, but hopefully faster. I need more training and a thorough medical work up on my cardio and respiratory capacity.

I agree with Harry--today was a great day for a ride.
I had to do it--went after the 215K today, since we didn't finish it yesterday.

Beer and kielbasa--at this very moment. :D Doritos and beer are on the schedule later tonight. After that, it's beer and beer. :thumb:
NR, I think I  you.
My most recent Facebook status update: "Yeesh. The monsoon 24 Hours of Booty. Followed by the Shenandoah vertical rock-fest. Followed by the gale-force Seagull Century. :0 :0 I think for the next few weekends my butt is gonna be on the couch, watching football and drinking beer."
The Seagull was its usual crazy self. The feature this year was 40 miles of pretty fierce wind, most of it in the face. The temperature went from 78 degrees at 8:00 to 65 at 3:00. Rain for just a short time, right at the beginning (during which I was replacing the rear-wheel tube, which had exploded  -- considerately enough, while I was in the dining hall having breakfast.)

The only time I did the Seagull was 2007 when I took this pic unintentionally featuring who? You, dear.
That day was so good, I probably won't do another one--just to keep the memory.

Oh, yeah, I remember you posting that picture a while back -- of course I don't remember you actually taking it, because I don't think I had even met you yet! (At least not in person, anyway.) Pretty bizarre coincidence that I'm randomly in the background!
Yeah, 2007 was great, definitely the best since I started going in 2003.

Shorty ride seems perfect.
Middle ride: I am not totally positive that you are allowed to leave your car parked in that Mt. Wash parking lot. Probably fine though.
Greenspring is a little bit difficult but no big deal.- it's a good connector here to the park.
Is the construction complete along smith ave into Mt. Washington? That sucked the last time I rode it. If it's not it's easy to re-route (7 mile to Wallis to Cross Country). Good route.
Long ride: Finally, googlemaps shows Deepdene going through to Edgevale. I would put in a warning about that super steep section of Dogwood. I wouldn't wish anyone to climb up it, but I think I dislike coming down it more. A blind curve at the steepest part. Yikes. Safe, only if you know to slow way down.
No probs with that route either. Good rides Barry. -GB

I thought about throwing that out there too, but I feel pretty strongly about riding a confirmed route.
I don't think I've got the mental fortitude to handle 300k of riding + another 20k (or another hour) of getting lost.
Pre-rode the Point to Point today. Nice ride, but it took me a while because I was doing a lot of note taking.
The cue is much clearer now and that's good. The only crappy thing is that Fort McHenry is really not even worth visiting now. No bikes allowed on any path and at least 1/3 of the park is under construction.
I'm gonna leave the start there anyway.

I did the Tawneytown BBC ride today (and got caught by the "Hey you are not from around here" police, hence the corrected spelling.) Total for the day 108 miles and now sitting down to chocolate ice cream (competing for Maxine's emoticons ;) ) Absolutely gorgeous country side out there, I really want to got out there again when the fall colors happen.
Dear Park Rd was closed so I ended up coming home on 140 between Westminster and Reisterstown. So in the midst of rush hour traffic I'm taking the truck climbing lane doing 8 mph with cars doing 60mph all around me.
GB thanks for the feed back, I'll respond more a bit latter.

That's what a cell phone with built-in GPS is for.
Anyway, where's your sense of adventure? Louis & Clark didn't "pre-ride" their journeys and they had much more adversity to deal with. j/k
Most of the route on the Middletown 300K I've ridden when I did the 3:30am ride start to Mt Joy [in the rain] and this past Sunday's ride. The portion up River Rd to Middle town promises to be scenic, then I'll ride a higher traffic road to Mt Joy's Prospect Rd south, head back into the Columbia area, and find River Rd on the south side of the bridge. I'd follow that road, but stay close to the river for the scenery, hence the little side trip on River Hill Rd. River Hill will get me back to River, then Holtwood where I climb out of the valley to Quarryville, take 272 south to Conowingo... yada, yada, yada. No worries! :thumb:
What could happen? Heck, if the weather is good, I might just ride that this coming weekend starting at 3:30am, again.

When do the pancake rides start up again? mmmm, pancakes. Sorry, I've been absent of late; it seems I've gone and gotten myself addicted to cyclocross and I'm focusing on figuring out how to do better in my races. As it turns out, being fat and out of shape is detrimental to success in this form of racing as well, geesh!
Anyhow, I haven't ridden with any of you guys this year (intentionally) so it'd be nice to get together at some point and do a ride.

Edit: November 1st is the next Pancake ride in Carroll County.

"What was it like way back then?" The this-month-in-history of the MD Peeps thread.
This time last year(2008)
We were figuring out the when and where for "Tour de Beer". (which of course makes me ask myself that question for this year). Josh and GB ride out to Frederick together, and on the return Josh thinks that the interstate might make a faster route home. So, he knocks out a few miles on I-70. NR is finishing centuries like they’re going out of style.
Year before that(2007)
NR and Barry were comparing the results of their new helmet cams- both shaky. GB's new Bianchi gets ripped off near the courthouse during jury duty. NR does not manage to keep the rubber side down during a Nov. BBC ride. He posts pics (not suitable for family viewing) of the damage to his backside. :twitchy: Barry also goes down on RR trx, tacoing the wheel on the original truck bike.
And the year before that(2006)-
Thread is just getting started, but there’s already activity by "old-timers” NR, Charlie, ccrider, RacerMike, Barry and Maxine. NR is rendered “car-free” because a drunk smashes into his truck while parked at his house. He is also pushing hard to hit 10k miles for 2006. (slacker ;)) ...and, just like this season every year, we're all complaining about the weather.

Funny!!! Guess my closest is "Roadzuki." ("Over-the-hill summer cyclist weekend trips; always wears helmet, even while eating.") Minus the frou-frou coffee, though.
Well. I can't say I am as hardcore as you all but this has been my first week of trying to get into a diversified workout which includes riding to the gym, I think of it more as a way from point A to B, not calculating mileage or recording it as part of my workout, but climbing up Bellemore after a 45 minute spinning class plus weights is GREAT! and I don't have to sit in traffic like a ******. I did it Tuesday and Friday, I think Wednesday but I can't remember. Friday was wet and cold but it's such a short trip it aint no no thang. I have my mt bike rigged with my Nightrider lights, back being very very bright and blinky, seat post bag plus my backpack. The mtb makes for a good urban assault vehicle as you can jump up curves to avoid distracted drivers, etc. There are at least three good rides getting back to my house, all include climbing, of course. Bellemore, Lake (traffic!), Poplar Hill, mtb comes in handy here, and through Rob E Lee park to Woodbrooke for some dirt and pavement, though getting back across Charles is a *****-cars cars cars, and more f-ing cars!!
Today I drove to the gym as I woke up late and half of my wet wear was in the wash, but Saturday morning traffic is minimal.

It turned night into day, brighter than anything else I ever had. For only $85.
High is really bright really more than plenty, Medium close to high probally use most of the time, low is still brighter than my other LED lights, flashing mode is insanely fast good for daytime?,then the useless SOS mode, just in case the bike and I take a wrong turn and end up on a deserted sland.
Maybe one evening I'll do some beam shots.
On my short ride I did notice how cold it was as my face was freezing, found my balaclava for the ride in tommorow,
Gotta love the lows in the 40's and the high's in the 70's, better than it raining though.

Looks balmy. Seems like a decent turnout considering the weather. Your afternoon looked nice, a little chilly but I saw the sun peaking out.
Josh: Thanks for the review of the light. I've been reading about them. Seems I've got enough lumen this year but maybe next. We'll see how well they perform over the long haul. Will you be commuting with it?
Commuted today with it, everyone and everything yeilded to me, turning traffic, cross traffic and even the canton/federal hill dog walkers at 6am (those goobers don't even yeild to cars)
I think if the CFO (the wife) will allow it, maybe I'll get another one for the helmet.

Josh, what model do you have? Is this (http://www.geomangear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=138) the one you have? I'm thinking about getting the one I linked but wanted to know if yours is something different.
Thanks,

Hey a few of us are going to re-ride the 3/4 century route of the 2009 Civil War Century tomorrow; this time in SUNNY weather! Meeting in Thurmont Park (across the road from where the BBC reg tents were set up) at 9 AM. No particular schedule from there on, but will stop in Smithsburg (30miles) and Gettysburg (55 miles) for lunch. This was a beautiful ride even in the rain in September. We're thinking it will be even more so in the sun with the leaves changing colors. E-mail me if you're inclinded to join us. Anticipated pace will be 15 -16 MPH average is my best guess.

Nice report. I know I would have been hoping for no shows so I could have gone back to bed. This of course is what separates a casual rider (me) from randonneurs. I never know how to spell that.

Anybody want to go see this flick on Oct 22nd? One night only. I think it's playing in Owings Mills and a few other places.

Any interests in hooking up for this? Super easy for me to meet at Owings Mills, but if there is a larger Columbia contingent I'll go there.

I was planning on it but I have yoga that night, yes..yoga.
I expect it will eventually be released on DVD then I'll have a private viewing party at my house-10' screen! and free popcorn + beer.

I like that idea better. Especially since I just checked the ticket prices at Owings Mills- $12.50 !
In fact, I like Harry's movie night idea whether this movie is out on DVD soon or not.
I've been interested in seeing this new film: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1329390/

Is that on DVD? Looks like it may just be an internet release. That's a ride I'd like to do---when my kids are in college and I figure out what to do with my wife. Pay her off maybe?
