Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. i signed up and i'm going to use my bareknuckle b/c i don't own a geared ike bor care to own one. some of my friends bailed on me and thus far, it's just me. anyone else want to join me at a slow pace of 13 -15mph. (my seat is a bit uncomfortable). it's my first century and i signed up for the 100 miles b/c the other miles seems so wimpy. i live in queens by kissena and the route travels through there. i was going to stop by my house and have a beer and then continue on. anyone else is more than welcome to join me.

i did a pretty hilly century a few week ago. 48 or 49 16. brakeless. very fast. get the saddle thing figured out now. i couldn't feel my shaft for almost a halfday. also... chamois cream... very good idea. my ass cheeks were chaffed raw without it. lots of water. a little food (in the way of bars). make sure yr shoes/socks are comfy. etc. have fun. bullhorns are nice, cos yr wrists are gonna get tweaked and varying the hand positions'll be nice.

Recommend you replace the beer with gatorade, hardcore dude.

yea, i've been studying Na+ and Cl- interactions in the body concerning a humans water balance. i got it down to a since. pre-hydrating the day before the race, carb breakfast, powergels and plenty of water. thanks.

I am doing the Century! I was going to do it fixed, but after doing the Montauk Century fixed I decided to throw on a freewheel just in case I crap out towards the end. Time will tell.

If the route has you stopping and starting a lot, I would consider putting a brake on your bike if you don't have one already. I usually ride brakeless no problem but I rode a century without one and it really ****ed my knee up from all of the stopping and starting.
Edit: Oh yeah, have fun too. I will be in NY that weekend and I want to go to CP to greet her when she is done.

do it. i did a solo metric century on my fixie, good times. i averaged 17 mph, 42x15. i brought a camelback, two powerbars, and was set. i am gonna shoot for a full century some time this fall.

no, there'll be thousands of other morons doing the nyc century too. you won't be alone. if u have ur bib, u can skip the long sign-in line at the start and just go straight to the start and take off. that way u'll be guaranteed to get the krispy kremes in prospect park.

i may volunteer at a stop in astoria for a few hours in the morning and then head out for the rest of the ride.
We're all riding too (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=224090) - though I'll be on my mtb!
After the "tour de Brooklyn" way too many riders and those who can't ride in a loose pack...

I skipped the Tour De Brooklyn this year. Last year I witnessed an incredible number of accidents and it turned me off. The Century is a little better if you are towards the front.

Beer is actually a super recovery drink, but I wouldn't recommend it for a mid-ride drink. Good luck, stay comfy!
you'll have fighter escort indeed - I will be there..(now maybe not officially)
this century is pretty flat, except up north and even then it ain't bad.
do what VD recommends - rock chamois and chamois cream.

I'll be there, going fixed. Still haven't decided to do 55 mile or the full 100.
I'm in shape to do the 100, but I don't know if the arse pain is worth it. Just got a Brooks, too, but it only has 250 or so miles on it.
Should I man up and do the 100 mile?
Regardless, see you there, have fun!

100 miles fixed isn't really that bad. if you take 2 quick breaks at 35 and 70 miles to refill your camelback/water bottles you should be fine. you shouldn't have to stop at all of the rest stops. i've also really become a fan of organic fruit and nut bars like the clif nectar cranberry/nut thing and these things (http://www.veganessentials.com/catalog/real-berry-organic-fruit-bar.htm) if you can find 'em.
they seem easier to eat, stomach and digest than nasty-ass powerbars or overly dry classic clif bars and the like. the unrefined fruit sugar also doesn't seem to drug me up and beat me down like other forms of sugar. those emergen-c electrolyte packets or the ultima recovery drink powders are also great to mix in with some water to keep handy. neither of those taste as gross as gatorade when they get warm (if you don't get a chance to dilute it) and they're actually pretty easy to down when you might not be in the mood for them but should likely be drinking them.
this is just stuff that i've found true for myself. maybe it's applicable. maybe it's not.

Fark it, might as well.
I'm there to enjoy the ride anyway, not race.
Is the weekend here yet?
ya know...I just realized...fifty-five bucks...hmmm
it appears that my wallet(?) developed a hole in it sometime during the NACCCs.
I don't feel bad about it cuz it was money all going to the right place.
May not be able to do this ride, but I'm cool with that call.
( unless I just jump on somewhere :amadeo: )

volunteer to be a mech for a few hours later in the day and then ride out on the route to astoria. hang and help people. then finish the ride. wallet holes are not a problem in this scenario. :tstar:
is it possible to just hop on the ride at the back of the pack (like in the 5 boro bike tour)?
or do you actually have to pay? it't not like they're even closing the streets to traffic.
$55 seems like a bit much for a bike ride, right?
oh wait, $45 since i'm a T.A. member.
but even that is too much.
and I'm not even smart enough to be a volunteer mechanic.
nah, they are working pretty hard to pull this sh*t together. Got no problem with a donation (if'n I could afford it)
ooh, maybe I'll do polo instead! Don't they do polo on sundays?
