Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Tires? Yes. Tires.

Recommendations? I've ridden Armadillos, stiff as hell. Was thinking I might give Gatorskins a shot, but maybe the whole tough tire thing really isn't my bracket. Hopefully something in the $60 to $80 range. Less than that is even better. Any words, slurs, wild hand gestures greatly appreciately.

holla at some maxxis re-fuse'. like 30 bux (or less) a pop, ride nice and last forever. never had a flat in over a year on them...knock on wood. not quite as grippy as the conti's but cheap, durable and rideable....

I just picked up some vredstien tri-comp (pardon the spelling). So far they feel nice, fast and smooth. I don't know how tough they are, but it sounds like you're looking for something more along the race-tire route anyway.

I have the michelin carbon fiber tires. they are amazing. I have been riding these tired really hard and there is barely any wear.

I got some Schwalbe Stelvio's for $50cad each.

They're durable, fast, and grippy.

I like 'em a lot.

I weigh 215, maybe 230 with a bag full of gear.

I've tried several tire combinations and only All-Condition Armadillos work for me in the REAR.
In front, I ride with a very sticky, beautiful handling Continental 4 Season Grand Prix.

I don't have a lot of confidence in the Armadillo's handling qualities in front, but in the rear it feels very positive and direct.
In the rear, I actually prefer it to the Continental 4 Season Grand Prix.

But in front, nothing gives me as much confidence, handling and stickiness as the Continental 4 Season Grand Prix.

I've had a great experience with my Gatorskins so far. No flats, good handling, and only $30 each.

How about Vittoria Rubinos? They're very popular for a reason. Pretty light (the kevlar bead), pretty durable, pretty grippy w/ dual compound, pretty puncture resistant with that kevlar belt thing, comes in colours. What else do you want? You could even call the wire bead version cheap at $15 or so.They're serving me well, too.

They only come in 700c x 25 and 28 though. Maybe not a bad commuting tire.

So far I'm happy with my Rivendell Ruffy-Tuffies. I got them for the stupid reason that the name and the picture of a rhino on them amused me, but I like them enough that I got two more (speedblend type) from Target on closeout. They are also made by Panaracer.

I'm using Soma Everwear 700x26 right now. So far so good. They're really supple for such a hefty tire. Also made by Panaracer. Go figure.

While we're talking tyres, does anyone have first-hand info about the Panaracer Stradius Sport? Something like 250 grams with a kevlar bead and a puncture-resistant belt, all for $15. That's a lot cheaper than a Rubino Pro and almost the same characteristics, so I'm eyeballing it for when the Rubinos give in the ghost.

panaracer is where it's at. their tires mount straight, ride nice, and they're reasonably priced. i imagine that their "messenger" tire T-Servs would be worth looking into.

tires are very much a "to each their own" kind of thing, but i used Rubinos for over a year and recently decided i was totally finished with them. they are indeed cheap and come in colors, but i'd skid and skip through them too quickly.

i ride a lot, ride brakeless, and weigh a good 180, but i found they developed bald patches in weeks and then began to flat more than they should. they are also fairly hard to get on the rim.

i've realized that no rear tire is going to last me much longer than 2 months, i've gone back to gatorskins since then and love them. new gators are almost too sticky for my tastes, but once they have around 150 miles on them, they're perfect.

i picked up a pair for $20 each at t-town this spring and if i find them there in october, i'm getting 10 of them.

Find Michelin Carbon tires (they don't actually have any carbon fiber in them) on closeout somewhere, or look at Maxxis Re-Fuse tires. Both excellent.

the big swap meet is in the fall (sat oct 7 this year), and if you're looking for bike stuff, it's well worth renting a car and driving down from nyc.

I like my kenda concept tires they are pretty tough kevlar bead and belting had em for 4 months without a flat and I weight 220 and ride with afull bag most of the time = 20 to 45 pounds

i.e. I ran over a broken beer bottle the other day left a whol int my tread about a 16th of an inch in diameter but no leakage didn't puncture the tube

I also skid throught turns I don't skid to a stop or skip tho

+1 Vredestein Tricomps.. I have some really old ones on my roadie right now and they still look awesome, and have held up for a long time. I really like the colored sidewalls and the tread pattern (basically, none that is visible from more than two feet... bunch of little ridges, though)

My brother just picked up some of these for the road bike I built him. They look pretty nice, and, as far as i can tell, ride pretty nice. Seems hard to beat for a good, cheap (really cheap), tire.

I'm running some panaracer stradius sports and they work great and were cheap. Good traction, no flats, etc.

The performance tires are baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad. I've had a lot of peolpe come in complaining of flats, the tire blowing off the rim, etc. Stay away.
