Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - lugs, schmugs

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Fillet brazing is the hottest-looking framebuilding method IMHO. Filed-down welds are also fine by me, but some say it weakens the weld, so let it be fillet.

+aliens. Fillet brazed frames make me want to pour chocolate sauce on them, just to watch it flow over those curves... Maybe that's a bit to personal.

I used to be all floored by crazy lugwork, and have dreams about curly stay Hetchin's...
Not no mo, it seems. Something so sublime about the fillet. And, correct me if I'm wrong DW, but that **** ain't easy.
When I learned more about frame building, I learned, like in everything else I do, that simple and clean is usually best. Victorians are fine, but I'll take a Shaker saltbox any day.

My bike has lugs, but I like the Filet o' Fish sandwich at McDonalds too.

In a fillet braze the braze material forms a joining structure called a fillet...what 128 said.
Fillet is to "round off". The tubes are cut to fit eachother, a filler material is used to join them, and then the weld is smoothed down to appear as the tubes are joined as one.

While we are at this...I am going to offer a $300 discount to the first person to correctly tell me what the definition of "Fillet" is as it applies to brazing/welding, etc.
*fine print.
Offer not valid with any other coupons, discounts, etc.
Void where prohibited.
DW
A fusion weld, other than a butt, edge or fusion spot weld, which is approximately triangular in transverse cross-section.

hey don, i know you're frames start at 2k, but do you work with true temper? could you thrown an s3 shaped downtube on an ox platinum frame, and would using a shaped s3 top tube as a downtube be detrimental in any way? and how much (in the ballpark) would something like that set me back? just curious...if that's something we don't discuss in the forum, feel free to pm me or something.

when i get my custom frame, it will have a bb cluster lug, and all the other joints will be fillet brazed

its a road bike
That's weird. I thought this was a singlespeed/fixie forum.
thats weird, i thought that this was a website called bikeforums.net and this was a subforum about single speed and fixed gear bicycles, but figured people on it would have an interest in bikes in general. not to mention the thread is about welds...

Wait you're currently "homeless" and your looking at buying a 2k frame?
That's trustfund-punk as ****.

hahaha. negative. i i'm not homeless in milwaukee, but if i moved to chicago i would be, and i wouldn't have been in chicago long, just until breakaway needed someone. no sense in staying in a motel that long, and no sense renting a place only to move out shortly...not paying extra for stuff is a good way to be able to afford other things. that, and priorities man! (and getting parts at cost gets me lots of extra money for things that i can't get at cost.) oh yeah, that, and ... jealous much?

( i kid about you being jealous...i'm just sayin.)

Or are the welds just ground smooth? Can't tell.
Or are the welds just ground smooth? Can't tell.
they would have to add some serious filler rod during the welding process to end up with joints like that. I would bet on bondo or something similar.
an aside, I told an old school welder about fillet brazed frames, I think his response was "that sounds like a lot of work, **** that."

I concur. Makes me wish I didn't have to pay the exchange on that thing. And it does have a VERY hot paintjob.
