What is the lifespan of an average chainring? How often should they be replaced? What are the telltale signs of undue wear and tear?

The teeth get pointier and develop a "shark fin" look.

some aluminum one will delevop notches in the teeth too.

The chainring that came on my Sugino track cranks lasted approx. 6-7 months. The chain was digging into the front and back of the teeth creating lips. I replaced it with a Salsa chainring, so I'll see how long this one will last.

Do they sell 3/32 chainrings without ridges?

If you grab a steel one it ought to last way longer than the alu ones that are standard now. Pull one from an old bike if possible and save a lot of cash.

Check your chain for wear on a regular basis and your chainrings will last a long long time.

I've only had bad luck with chainring wear with a Salsa 48t. It wore fairly quickly, and got not-so-flat as well.

the chain should wear at the same rate as the chainring so check to see if your chain is stretched out. Mileage varies wildly; high-end chainrings are totally worth it.

use prolink regularly and make sure your chain tension isn't too high. otherwise the **** on your chain acts as a grinding paste.

also depends on your chain tension- too tight and wear will occur much more quickly.
