Mountain Biking - Bike Lights, NiteRider/New

Well I bumped into a NiteRider Rep in my LBS today and he showed me the new MiNewt LED Lithium Ion, light which has just come out on the line. It was such a coincidence as Ive been looking into a mid priced light to go out and hit the trails with. The dual will suit my needs. I can't imagine going over 3 hours, and most likely only about 1 to 2 at night on the trail. The light is about half the weight of similar combos. Helmet mount in the works for an additional 30 dollars later on down the road. When it says 3 times the intensity, based on the same wattage output of 4W ber LED, the demonstration there in the shop confirmed the output.

Funnily enough- I have just ordered my new lights this week but I have gone for the Enduro Turbo as most of my rides are about 3 hours long. I will ramble a bit- because I saw these lights in use last year on a night ride. 2x 5w luxions throw a lot of light, and it is obvious that the R&D was done by a night riding Mountain biker. I was happily doing the ride with my 2x10w halogens and A car appeared behind me on the fastest section of a downhill. That was what it seemed like as the rider that was behind me suddenly put his lights onto Full power and it light up the track. He was one of the Exposur team riders., and the annoying thing was- I Could have hired one of these lights for a nominal price. I was eaking out my lights and using a battery flood as main riding light and there was this bloke with a searchlight riding behind me.

On the helmet light- Go for it. The most usefull light to have when the trail gets a bit twisty- or if you want to do a repair, or just look around to find out what that thing moving at the edge of your vision was.

By the way- These are a lot more expensive over here that your sensibly priced quality lights.

the commuting forum is a good resource.. Having said that there are too many choices. I wish someone would recommend a sub 100 light for mountain biking... I'm about to give up and use a flashlight with hoseclamps.

I've got a Light and Motion Solo Logic Mv that works really well for the singletrack I ride. I got mine for $140, though you could get the standard Solo for about $100 at beyondbikes.com. The Solo is the same as the Logic MV, except it doesn't have lower wattage settings. In other words, you can only run it at 13 watts, instead of having the option to run it at 13, 10 or 6 watts. But that's really not necessary if your rides are less than a couple hours long.

The Solo can be used either as a bar mount or a helmet mount, and it's definitely light enough for singletrack. I don't think I'd want anything dimmer, though, so most other sub-$100 lights wouldn't interest me.

Can't speak for MTB (yet) but the Cygolite Rover dual halogen mounted on my helmet works well. You can change out the 6watt bulbs for 10watt. I've seen on sale between $60 and $70.

Maybe I'll make my own with some RC car batteries I allready have 7.2 volt how convienient.. that solo logic light does look good though.

You can pick up a Nite Hawk Raptor for about $50. It's a 10w flood that lights it up pretty well. The battery is a bit heavy (fits in a bottle cage), but for $50 who cares?

Last winter I was using a couple of Cateye Lamps. Both LED's But these are the better lamps around. One was the EL500 and this is a spotlight, and the other was an EL300 flood. This gave me adequate light for off road and battery life was good. However- A helmet lamp is more usefull. (I also used a helmet lamp) and I would cut out the EL500 and just run with the 300 and a good helmet lamp.

However- very shortly I won't have to work on candle power as I will have my new very expensive Exposure Enduro Turbo. And yes it is expensive. Somewhere in the region of around $500US so I just hope they work.

You could make one. There are many do it yourselfers around. 30$ total type of jobbies. Would be way brighter than most over the counter < 100$ lights.

these look like a good deal, but the runtime sucks...

any cheap source for 6v or 12V battery packs for those 30$ jobbies
