Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - SRAM PC1 Chain

Is there a trick to using the snap link that comes with the SRAM PC1 Chain? The male and female ends don't line up exactly, and, like an idiot, I managed to lose the instruction book. Any help would be great.

Line up the big holes and pull.

Put the plate over one pin and flex the chain laterally. Push on the plate until the other pin snaps on.

Yeah, what they have said. Look at the plate and notice that the holes are slightly oblong. Now flex it laterally, away from you, and the plate should pop right on.

say what you will about masterlinks, but if you're riding brakeless, i would not ride a masterlink.

i know some people will swear up and down that they're the the greatest things ever, but after you open and close that master link a few times, it starts to get easier to take off.

The PC-1 masterlink is a little different than the "pull-n-snap" type masterlink and is quite secure. . My past 2 chains have been PC-1s, riding practically every day, a few races, and they'v been very good to me.

Er, are you sure masterlinks are ok for fixed gear? PC1 says it's for single speed.

OMG you're right, the chain will asplode!

It should be fine. Don't worry, fixed gear is usually considered a subset of single speed.

...and whatever you do, fixed or free, the chain only receives stresses in the same direction- gets pulled along its length. Skidding is tough on chains, obviously, but skidding is tough on everything, and the chain is not likely to be the first to explode.

BTW. I was astonished to see a PC-1 in a shop that did not have beveled side plates. I wanted to buy it, buy tossed it back with disgust when I saw that. WTF is up with that? The shop guy said it was from this year's harvest...???

I know that much, thanks. This was a "black" or rather gray one, not nickel plated. This one should have beveled inner plates, too. The one I used last year certainly did.

The master links that have a plate with 2 pins and another plate that snaps on do not work well when reused. The snap on plate has lips that snap on the pins and hold it in place. Each time you snap the plate on or off the lips wear down. Eventually the lips are too small and when the chain is under tension the plate flies off.

The type that sram use on multi speed chains are intended to be reused. Not just to avoid a poor chain tool join when fitting the chain.
