Here's some pics of the rack I mounted to my front shock. Total cost was about 3-4 dollars plus the inexpensive rack from nashbar. It's sturdy, works well, and is cheap.

Looks good. I worry about the stregth of that L bracket though. Any way to do something similar using a solid triangle?

Yeah I wondered about that too, but it's mild steel. It doesn't support the weight, the clamp does. Also mild steel handles flexing MUCH better than aluminum. I've put ALOT of pressure on the rack (I'm 260#) and it's stable. The part of the "L" that goes vertical, up the groove on the shock, really locks the mount solid. Comparing it to the brake pivot mount on the Old Man Mountain and I think it's AT LEAST as strong... no it's stronger :-)

Seems to me that downward pressure would bend these VERY easy, and side to side movement would scratch/bang the fork. I've never seen one in person though...
