If a bicycle is not for transportation, what is it for?

I think a bike is what you want it to be. Luckily they are cheap enough to have different ones for different applications. Imagine if you wanted a commuter car, road car, off road car, downhill car, touring car, and/or a stunt car.

I think of my bike as transportation, hauling, and fitness.

That being said, I am about to buy a new commuter (trek 520), so I can turn my Torelli back into what it was bred for... a speed machine.

I read once that they considered the bike the number one selling toy in the world. That is the perception we have to deal with. The bike is a mode of transportation, at least that is always what I have used it for. But it is that perception that keeps our society from progressing when it comes to alternative transportation.

Well, I use my bike for just about everything. Transportation, recreation, holidays, sanity etc.

For making one little statement in this car-obsessed society...

I would have thought the car was the worlds best selling toy, but if there are more bikes than cars, then I am happy

To fiddle around with and fix up. I like 'em 'cause I understand how they work... unlike, for instance, my car. Not that I'm a raving Luddite or anything (what did Luddites think of the bicycle, anyhow?) but I like the connetion I get when I understand how something works and knowing I can fix the darn thing.

Oh, yeah. And transportaion, exersize, and brain clearance.

it's for getting from point A to point B. and if you're having fun along the way even better.

Of course, it doesn't help when half the bikes sold today are for riding over cliffs...

Seriously, if more people visited places like Japan (most of Asia, for that matter) or Holland I'm sure their opinions would change just a little. Then again, maybe not. Maybe they'd just think all those Hollander's (Hollandaise?) are poor ;)

A bicycle is a vehicle for transportation. It is also, in my opinion, a work of art. Anyone or any group who says that a bicycle is anything but transportation is a complete fool. And everyone knows that we have plenty of those out there!

If only my wife would let me keep my best ride hung over the fireplace!

Bikes just look cool. So utiliarian, so minimalistic, so functional. A bike is a work of art.

Its an excuse to put on the cute shorts and go out in public. Of course the goal then is to hook up with several other people dressed similiarly, get nice and sweaty together, breath hard together, and laugh at the dweebs of the world that don't understand.

A bike is for enjoying life to the fullest, all your senses come alive when you bike (not to mention how practical it is for getting around).

I like Ellie's response. Get me on my bike with my many bike t shirts, I make my statement- that I dissent from this maddness.. The roads are so full of hostility..
It says, " Blow up your car, Ride a bike." One time I forgot and wore it on the plane. And I wonder why I always get pulled aside for the additional security check.. and yes, I use my bike for every possible use- transportation, commuting, exercise, errands, exercise. Get me located closer to work and one of our three cars is up for sale, maybe two....
