Mountain Biking - Hunting Bike

I had an idea last night while I was sleeping....yeah, it was in a dream, but it might actually work.

Duplicolor makes temporary spray paint that washes off with soap, but will stay on in the rain.

I go hunting a lot at a Wildlife Management Area, and a lot of the places I prefer to hunt are not accessible by car because they do not allow cars in certain areas, but they DO allow ATV's.

The first weekend in October starts small game season (rabbits, squirrels, etc).

In my dream, I had painted my Dawg Deluxe with camo colors (olive drab, black, tan) in a striped pattern and I was riding it out to my favorite hunting spots. It certainly must be quieter than using an ATV, faster and easier than hiking, and I can get to places I cant get to on foot.

What do you guys think?

I don't really get why you would need your bike to be camo'd. You're gonna be moving, so the animals are going to see and hear you anyways. But if you do it, be sure to post some pics!

Hahaha, umm good idea in theory. Does it really matter if your bike is camo, I mean are you going to were ALL camo and facepaint. I think it is a waist of time and money. But good try and keep dreaming:p

Get it powdercoated camo, that'd be sweet

The bike is full of shiny chrome-colored parts. The rabbits and squirrels could see me coming from a mile away from the glint off the metal parts.

The duplicolor would be to reduce the glare and hide the bike. I'd be travelling very slowly (I've snuck up on rabbits in my car out there before), and the bike is very quiet in like 3rd gear.

Like I said..it was a dream, but when I woke up I thought to myself "you know..that just might work!"

I like the blue color, so I wouldn't get it permanantly powder coated, but if I were to build a bike, I certainly have always wanted a camo bike...like Mossy Oak or something...lmao!

And yeah, I hunt out there in full camo...with a face cover, gloves, etc. BTW, my camo of preference for the type of woods in my area is the New Mossy Oak HD.

I'd be carrying my Ruger Mark II 22/45 in a hip holster, and a Remington 1100-LT 20 on a shoulder sling, which is how I carry both firearms for hunting anyhow.

Keep in mind though, that one cannot shoot from a vehicle in Louisiana, and bikes are considered vehicles. I would only be using the bike to cover the ground between where I park and where I hunt. I would dismount, walk the right-of-way, then return to my bike to ride to the next one.

Using my car, I have easily taken my limit of rabbits within 2 hours with that method.....but I could get much closer with a bike before having to dismount and walk...and the idea of mountain bike HUNTING just kicks ass...lol

I get that kinda thing in my dreams too. Except They are very vague and I get what they meant after an event somewhat like my dream happens. Or if I imagen a place with a red car driving by, I will see that in a week or 2. Its kinda wierd.

I usually have very specific dreams....very detailed.

Like in my dream, I actually dreamed riding to the store to buy the paint, standing there deciding what colors, then driving back home, dragging the bike outside, then spraying it.

In my dream, I sprayed the entire bike tan first, then striped in the olive green, then did the black stripes. I sprayed all the chrome-colored parts olive drab.

I dunno...maybe is just my personality or something, but I always have extremely detailed, specific dreams that contain very precise details.

When I had my 1998 Nissan Frontier truck, I was trying to figure out a way to raise the truck using only the torsion bar adjusters without setting the spring rates too high. About a week into working on it, I dreamed I had made a part that allowed me to adjust the height without advancing the spring rate. It was a hanger that fit onto the insertion point of the bar with slotted holes for adjustment.

I woke up, remembered my dream, and made a tester out of plywood...attatched it to the truck, and it worked! I had a metal shop make two of them for me, and used them until I eventually sold the truck.

A loooong time ago Cabela had a bunch of bike related camo gear. Why not use some cloth camo tape and wrap your frame? Or, just go on a really muddy ride and don't wash up.

I'm trying to find the picture now, but I've seen a picture of a dude that would strap his deer to the top of his bike, across the seat and handlebars and top tube then push the bike out with the deer on top. Easy in, easy out, according to him. You could always rig something up with a game cart to pull it behind or one of those bob wagons or whatever.

Dragging a deer that weighs 180lbs out of the woods isnt easy. I'd imagine it would be much easier to push a bike or other wheeled-type thing than it would be to drag them out.

Although, I am talking about hunting SMALL game like squirrels and rabbits.

Oh, squirrels and rabbits...haven't you seen the other thread with the squirrel caught in the rotor? THAT'S how you're supposed to hunt small game! :)

I don't see any practical advantage to the camo paint scheme (does small game have the 600 square inches of orange rule?), but if you're going to do a bike in camo, a Kona is the one to do it with.

No, there's no hunter orange rule for small game, but there IS a law for big game, which doesnt start until the end of November.

I think I'm gonna go ahead and do it just to see what it looks like.

Why not try a camo tape? I am pretty sure it comes in a duct tape form. Easier to remove, and easier to put on.

I dont know what kind of bike YOU ride, but I've been places on mine that I wouldnt even consider trying to hike through.

As for duracoating my bike, I like the pearl/blue color of my bike. This would be more for entertainment value than anything.lol

you'll probably get shot at.. the bike tires sound just like rabbits in the woods..

I wouldn't bother with the camo .. just ride through one of those big atv mudholes and it'll cover it up.
As for the hike vs bike thing if your atv trails are like the ones here there are always those seemingly near vertical climbs that no matter how low your geared you can't spin up without standing and losing traction or lifting the front wheel and almost falling over.

I recently saw a silent rear hub that's available--marketed to police--could be good for hunting. There's a thread mentioning it somewhere here.
