I am looking around to find a new crankset (double) to replace a triple on a bike I am morphing into a cyclocross bike. One of the cranksets I am considering is the Bontrager Race Road (46/38). How does that compare to say a Shimano 105 or Ultegra? I like the idea that it has the outboard bearings, but I don't necessarily have to have the outboards. I'd like to stay in the under 200 to 200 range if possible. :) Thanks much.

I assume you want a compact double. Shimano makes an Ultegra-level compact double (FC-R700), which has 50/34 chainrings. It uses a bottom bracket cup with external bearings (in fact, all of the 10-speed components use external bearings). You should be able to find it on eBay for about 200. I managed to find mine for just over 200 shipped, including the Ultegra bottom bracket cups.

Yep. Compact. Question: I will be running 9-Speed. Does anyone know of problems running 9-speed with the crank designed for 10 speed? I had heard of some rubbing (more then usual) when in the small ring in the front and the lower cogs in the rear, but I don't know how genuine that was or if someone just didn't have it tuned properly. Thanks.
