Bicycle Mechanics - Coaster Brake Clunk

Hello All,

I have a problem with my Nexus 3 coaster brake. It makes a nasty clunk when I apply the brake a certain amount. It only clunks once per braking session (i.e. it clunks the first time I brake, and will only clunk again if I pedal forward then brake again) and only happens when a certain amount of pressure is put on the brake (i.e. I can slow down a little, but if I press the brake a bit harder, it makes the clunk, then I can brake with full force.)

It's very annoying and feels like my new bike is braking. Dunno if my hub may have been improperly lubed or something? Or is this normal? I'm gonna check out Shimano's website and see how hard it is to repack the hub with grease. But I dont know if that will help, and I dont wanna pull the rea wheel apart if this is normal..

Is the brake arm attached on the right side of the hub to the frame?

Yeah, I checked the tightness of that arm, and it is attached and doesnt move when the brake is applied. The way this happens, that sounded like the most likely cause. But I think it's internal to the wheel.

May have to bite the bullet and go to the bike shop. Even Sheldon says the multi speed coaster assemblies are really complicated.

I'm proficiant with E-110 coaster brakes, but Nexus is something I've never tackled. My wife's 3-speed Nexus is a freewheel and uses a lever operated drum brake for the rear.

My brother will soon be the proud owner of a single speed worksman with cable operated drum brakes. Cant wait to see what their like.

Worksman likes to use a motorcycle type drum brake, while the Trek has a small unit mounted on the left side of the hub.
