Too bad you missed a good ride. Optional routes except Thursday which was 25 miles. All days have a 25 option. Friday'soptions included 25, 63,81,100. Saturday's 25, 47, 63, Sunday's 25 or 40. I got in a total of 225.

How was the wind this year? Last year's Saturday NC Metric was blowing hard until you made the turn. Last year I went from hi-cadence spinning at 15mph to cruising at 30 after the turn (with that 15-20mph tailwind).

The weather was near perfect all four days. No more than a light breeze. Cool nights for sleeping (actually got in the sleeping bag rather than just on it) some complained that it was hot during the day, but ~80 for early September is fine. I got to the camp ground set up my tent and road the 25 mile loop – Thursday’s only option. The provided dinner was Spaghetti. There was a lady singer after.
Friday started out dumb – I forgot my sunglasses and left with an empty water bottle. There was a rest stop not far. There was no one there so I kept going (even though it was setup and had water coolers in sight). I missed seeing the next one so my first stop was at 30 miles. Unbelievably I then missed the next three stops. I stopped in Littleton N.C. and drank the water I had gotten at the only rest stop I had been to. I saw a place that had been a stop last year, right on Lake Gaston, but I didn’t see any bikes or sign. I finally stopped and checked my route sheet. Ok I was less than a mile past the last one (the one I looked at but didn’t see the sign), but didn’t want to go back the next one was only about six more miles. A SAG wagon stopped and I drank a half water bottle of water and then filled it up. She asked if I wanted to ride – I lied and said no. I got to the next stop with burning feet and spent some time sitting and drinking water I ate a two peanut butter sandwiches and a banana. It was 2 and I was hungry as well as thirsty this was mile 64.
As I was riding some one waved and I realized I was about to pass another stop. The same thing at the next stop (Valentine Va. Post Office). My eyes must be tired from no sunglasses. The next stop (the homemade ice cream stop) was closed. I got back to the campground at 6:20 – 11 hours and 100 miles after I left. I was drained. Supper was fried fish and it sure tasted good. If Floyd is telling the truth then a couple of drinks should help with recovery so I had a shower and two cups of wine, one red and some mixed sherry, and was asleep before nine.
Saturday I woke just after 6 and was again the first to get breakfast. I started off slow to see how it would go. No more missed stops, but then I was reading the route sheet and watching my mileage. I had decided when I registered to do the 47 mile ride in the morning since it was new and went to Emporia were I had never ridden. All was going g until mile 33 or so I started to feel tired and was slowing up some. But then I was ok by mile 40. Latter I mentioned it to some one, they told me I hadn’t noticed that is was a false flat with a long climb and of course on chip and oil pavement. By mile 40 it was smooth pavement I was thinking I wasn’t pushing hard, but was running between 16 and 17 on the flats. See Floyd could be right.
That got me back in time to rest a little and have some of that miracle recovery drug watermelon (don’t tell WADA how good this is). Then the group picture and the 13 mile ride out to a plantation for snack and then working peanut farm for demonstration. This was the group ride, hundreds of bikes and even a deputy with blue lights to control the other kind of traffic.
Sunday’s choices we a 25 or a 40 mile ride. I was feeling good so I took the 40. This ride took too long because there were 7 rest stops in route. ones like the tomato stop and the cucumber stop. One stop run by a lady that got out of the hospital for the event She was in a wheelchair with oxygen, but was there with kids, grandkids, and great grandkids. She had permento cheese sandwiches, hot dogs, ham biskets and gobs of fruit. You couldn’t try it all, but I had a couple of things with fresh onion added.
Just describing the rest sops would take pages. They were all-good and seemed to have a theme. In addition to the ones already mentioned: Cookies, pickled watermelon, peanut products, restored farm equipment and icepops, united we stand (retired army officer) with fruit, breakfast muffins and coffee…
225 miles for me that’s a four day record.

Yes I remember that wind. This year the highest wind was a welcome breeze.
