General Cycling Discussion - Where are Forum members from?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Has anyone else noticed that a lot of people in the forums don't bother to fill out their profiles?
Is there some reason for this that I 'm not aware of?
I can certainly understand not wanting to include information that is considered too personal, but the area (doesn't have to be precise) you reside and ride and birthdate year (or age) seem reasonable to include.
I like knowing where people are from. I think it is a big part of us, and our location may allow us to have information that is beneficial to others.
What do you think?

It is nice to know...it adds just a little bit more to a member's individuality. I'm always checking to see where folks are from.

i agree that especially the location but also age helps to put comments into perspective.
i personally don't see why others wouldn't fill out this info, but maybe they have reasons?
but riders from different countries and different areas of the US can have very different perspectives on many things relating to cycling b/c of differences in the local environment, weather and cycling conditions... i should know as i've lived in 3 (kind of 4) cities in Texas, Oregon, Massachussetts and Germany all post age 18 and been an active cyclist in each.
so for those of you without a place, please fill out the basic info unless you really have a good reason not too.

Privacy...I put mine in there because I could care less as anyone coming to whistler is more than welcome to drop me a line. But I do know on some sites I never gave any personal info and it in fact took me 4 months before I trusted this site to drop my real info on it.

I understand that a person may not want to divulge their name and specific location. Most of us have usernames that do not reveal our real name. That's what I was trying to communicate when I say you don't need to be specific. For example you could just say you were from B.C. That tells me a lot. Your Canadian, it gives me an idea of the climatic conditions you face as a cyclist, etc. As Nathank said it just helps put things in perspective.

I like looking at folks' profiles also. I'm chuckling, though, 'cause I notice Bikedud didn't include his birth year or age

True enough...but some people don't want you to know that...I don't know I have been online for 15 years (bbs days anyone?) and privacy was a huge concern...to be able to profile someone because of their area can still be an invasion to some people :)
on one site I go into so much detail that if you know the layout of whistler you can more or less know where my house is :D..

I can remember 1960. The reason I haven't put age info in my profile is I like to think I'm still young. Looking at the cold hard facts in my profile would just shatter the illusion for me! :D

I think a lot of people don't know how or it just doesn't occur to them. Maybe Joe should put an "edit profile" link right under the user name.

It's very helpful at times for people to include their location.
I've seen a few threads from people without locations saying stuff like, "I want to do some riding out west. Anyone know of any good trails?"
Out west of where? Ukraine? Australia? Canada? UK?

I'm from Singapore!! Not exactly a great place for cycling but who cares, I love being a Singaporean. I don't see much of Singaporeans around here in the forums though..... where on earth are you guys ???? Being a cyclist doesn't mean you have to stay away from the computer and internet does it?
