To the 'just spin faster' boyz...what if the people you're with are spinning just as fast as you?
Then you'd better spin even faster or upshift--while maintaining cadence!--if you plan to keep up. Of course, if you can't do either, then you're getting dropped regardless of your gearing selection.

I dropped by the LBS on my dinner break. The person whose knowledge/opinion I trust most happened to be helping me, and he tells me for plain white bar tape, he'd get the Fizik. Not in stock at the moment, but he can order some for me. Then I tell him what I'm after, and he tells me the whitest bar tape he's seen is the Deda. So I'm getting the Deda white bar tape special ordered in. Should get here late next week. In the meantime, I'll use my off-white bar tape that I installed last night.

I also picked up the thinner Specialized Turbo tubes, which they finally had back in stock in the short valve version. And was so tempted to buy the Ritchey WCS stem; maybe some other time.

It's a pretty good white. But if you look up close, there's some beige/brown spots in it (purposely). It looks pretty sharp, and will probably age more gracefully, but it's not absolute white. The Fizik tape evidently is white with nothing in the way except some perforations. The Deda tape evidently is white with nothing in the way except some subtle embossing. And the Deda tape supposedly is "noticeably whiter" than the Fizik tape. (And it happens to be modestly cheaper, too.)

The new carbon one?
No... that's the alu one with a carbon wrap. No need for senseless weight. I'll save that for my newfound obsession with bar tape. ;) I don't know if the Deda is the lightest or not, but it should be the sharpest looking. And yes, I saw the Cervelo bar tape. But it's supposed to be just like the Deda. Until someone wants to sponsor me, I'll stick with the cheaper Deda tape.

No fooling. I was racing when Greg Lemond was a 15 year old JUNIOR! Merckx, Zoetemelk, De Vlaemick (sp?) were our heros. Yet we knew how to keep our Tessostar cloth tape white - a liberal coating of talcom powder applied immediately after wrapping the bars.

Ditto...with road bikes, I at least know what's "good". MTB's are just Greek to me. My problem is that I desperately need a fork upgrade, but I have no idea about how to do it or what to buy. I also need new wheels, but have no idea what's sufficient for my needs.

And following yesterday's flat, I got an Armadillo tire for the rear along with a new tube (need to practice my tube repair on the punctured one, and didn't want my first attempt going back on the bike just in case)

Also got a pair of Specialized full-finger gel gloves as it's getting quite chilly in the mornings (this past week an exception)

Okay...here's the deal. I have a '95 Cannondale F600, and I just love the frame. It's a hardtail, light, responsive, and reminds me of my bmx days. I have tried and don't prefer full-suspension for the style of trail riding that I'll do.

My Headshock is and has always been a thorn in my side. It has the lockout, and 9x of 10, I'll lock it out, effectively rigidifying (nice word!) my frame. The only experience I've had with traditional front suspension was a Rock Shock from '95 on a Gary Fisher, which tweaked in an odd and unsettling way, taco'ing my wheel within the first two rides. Exchanged it for the C'Dale.

It's got Coda components on it...so here's what I'd like to replace at hopefully no more than 4-6 hundred...seeing as how I bought the bike NEW for 8, I'd like to upgrade it for less than that.

Fork: I'd love to keep the headshock, because I like the rigid fork and single-point suspension on it. I think the design is the most sound for FS. Rebuild kit? Aftermarket anything? If I replace the shock with Fox or Marzocchi, I'll need a headset (1 1/2 to 1 1/8) adaptor and headset....and a new stem.
Wheels: I have old Acera's on them, with single-walled, tube tire rims and 7 speed hub. Definitely need new wheels. I have V-brakes which I prefer to Disks, so will need 9 speed hubs, with rim brake rims. I'm 185 lbs and like to jump.
Crank: I have a Coda crank with square taper BB. Maybe an external bearing BB and better cranks are in order.
Derailleurs: I have Deore and they do exactly what they're supposed to do.

A plan of attack would be helpful.

EDIT: Here's my bike (http://www.airfreetires.com/Specs/Step5.asp?BikeId=11617&Brand=Cannondale&Model=F+600&Year=1995)...essentially stock.

The Forte Pro pedals I use are rebranded Wellgo's, so I think I can safely comment. I am NOT a fan of these single-sided SPD pedals. They are top heavy, so will always be upside down when you leave a stop, and it can be a royal pain getting them flipped over and clipped in. If you want to stay with SPD cleats, I'd stick with double-sided pedals, even though they weigh more.
