Southern California - The Shopping Thread!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I just read a chart in RoadForums (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=264734) that says the Specialized tires I've been using (for puncture resistance) are slowing me down by sticking to the road. No wonder I'm so slow.
Where can I get the best deals on Michelin ProRace2's?
Thanks Mo...that is some interesting info!!
I wonder where they got that??

A week ago on Sunday I made an order on ProBikeKit for the Shimano R700 compact crank and a Dura-Ace chain. Does anyone know how long it takes for them to ship? They are somewhat lacking in terms of order status (I've only received an email confirming my order but nothing else).

I think you should be getting yours any day now, based on my experience with PBK (if I order on Friday, I get it before the next Friday). I have read that orders under $200 don't require additional duties, so maybe yours got held up because of that? Don't know, just a guess.

It shouldn't.

Then which BB do you get if you get the compact?
ie: Currently have an ISIS Shimano BB, and an FSA MegaExo BB...neither of which I would want to befoul a new R700.

The Shimano Dura-Ace or Ultegra external BB cups. Should run about $35 for either. I'm not sure what the difference is between the two.

Speak of the devil, no more than 5 minutes ago I finally got my package. The crankset came in plain, non-retail packaging. OEM packaging possibly? If it were I don't mind considering a savings of at least $50.
As Voltman stated, the R700 does not come with bottom bracket cups. I don't know what the difference is between the Dura-Ace and Ultegra bottom brackets but I wouldn't imagine it would be very much. What is surprising is that at PBK the price of the DA BB (which sells for around ~$31) is about 3 dollars cheaper than the Ultegra one . I was considering ordering the Dura-Ace BB but I only have about 1200 miles on my bike and it was suggested that I wouldn't need it.....yet.....

I got a pair of keo carbons last week. They've been great and i've put about 200 miles on them. They replaced a $20 set of nashbar pedals which replaced some eggbeaters. No more squeaking coming from the cleats and the covers are really nice to have.
i'm looking for a decent set of mavic SL's to reward myself in advance for doing the KoM series!

I blame Bush.

i'm actually fairly conservative, but have become severely disenchanted with anything coming from the right recently... token measures and a bunch of out of control spending, but i'll leave it at that.
btw, i believe the green thing is called a shmoo or is an incarnate thereof.

Finally broke down and bought a light. E-bay, nothing special (NiteRider Trail Rat 2.0), but enough to get me out on some group rides -- both road and mtb. Also a cheap tail light.

I need a good long sleeve winter base layer. I think I'm going to head down to Performance in Pasadena and see what they have. Anything I should look for? :)

I lost my white PI Optik long sleeve jacket a couple of weeks ago so I went out and bought a replacement at Incycle......Louis Garneau Wind Chill jacket. Not quite as light and compactable as the Optik but this one has rear pockets, stretchy side panels, and I love the burnt orange color. :D

Hey thank you! Quality is very similar to the Pearl Izumi, stitching is good....in fact this jacket uses ripstop nylon just like the PI jacket I lost. I'm already liking this jacket over the PI in that, besides having rear pockets, it has a 2-way zipper so I can unzip the bottom if I wanted to retreive something from my jersey pocket.

bought some canari gel road shorts but can't find a picture of them online to save my life... Bad ass, I love Specialized Products, The Allez was my first road bike and I LOVED it !!!
Just pulled the trigger on this bad boy....
Actually its is fair shape...wheels need truing...derailleur needs work....tires are rotted...hb tape is bad...
I think this a 1991 or 92 model...but cant find much info...
Shimano 105 front and rear...mostly carbon..but heavy...
I am most curious to try the Brooks saddle...but dont think this will ever see the road...I will get it fixed up enough to work on my trainer...so for $50 plus about $40 at the lbs...seems like a good deal..

That chain looks super effective going around the backside of the derailleur like that. ;)
ps. If you just can't get comfy on that Brooks saddle, I'd be willing to take it off your hands.
(pps. the saddle alone is worth $50...you got a screaming deal)

Yeah I noticed that also..I took this before I fixed the chain...the rd was also bent and hit a spoke or 2 and bent them..so the lbs is fixing that...
Yeah...that brooks needs some work..the leather needs to be conditioned...it has been sitting in a damp storage area....but if I really love it..it might end up on my regular roadie..
No... thats carbon! :D
Thats was why I am not sure I would want to ever make this road worthy...it has lots of dings and scratches..so not sure if there is any real damage to the carbon???
But we'll see...might make a nice SS???

Herb, that era carbon tubes with aluminum lugs had some issue with corrosion. The unfortunate result can be separation. I would check those connections very carefully. If used exclusively on a trainer, it probably won't result in catastrophe.
I agree with Mo, the saddle alone looks to be worth the cash. Good purchase.

Thanks Jim...
I also recall seeing something that these were also prone to rear dropout failures...
I think this guy will be a trainer only bike...much safer...I dont think I am ready for an SS anyway...
I hope I can get the brooks back into good shape...it needs some tlc...

yah but the stress of mounting it to a trainer might be too much stress for the old carbon seat stays......
I know when I mount my alum Felt to the trainer, it flexes a good amount.
