This is a new endeavor on which I am embarking. My main priority at the moment is to learn about mountain bikes and find out what I want in one. Any advice/suggestions would be awesome.

Welcome to the forums. There's a lot of info on this site, but to start you should go to the Mountain bike section and starting reading and asking questions there. You'll soon be off in the right direction.
