Bicycle Mechanics - Pedals and stripped cranks

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hi all, I teach a spinning class and I'm having a problem with stripped threads on the crankarms. Last week I installed new two-sided pedals on the spinning bikes. The new pedals have SPD pedals on one side and toe straps on the other. I hand threaded them on and then lightly tightened with a pedal wrench. They went on smoothly with no problem. There were two classes on Thursday, one Friday and one on Monday. The next class on Monday evening, the left pedal on one bike came off and the crank threads were stripped. Today (Thursday) the left pedals on two bikes suffered the same fate. I'm afraid that the threads on the new pedals or the cranks are not universal and I'm in for more busted bikes. The bikes are built by StarTrak and we haven't had any problems prior to the new pedals. Any ideas? Thanks, Jack

I think your right. I bet the cranks have some non-standard fine thread. Cheap tactic to make you use their pedals.

Jack :) So how old are your spinning bikes.I have 1999 startrac bikes and the aluminum cranks are just falling apart. :)I have 2 bikes down because of the same problem. The one thing I am worried about is some body getting hurt.

The first 11 bikes were purchased in 1999. We just bought 4 more last month and two of those are down but I think that's because we put the non-Star Trak pedals on them. We're contacting the Star Trak reps but the cranks are on back order. I'm going to replace those two sided pedals with the original pedals tomorrow and hope I save some bikes.
